ARCTIC MONKEYS (Rock band)

Where: Formed in Sheffield, 2002

THE HUMAN LEAGUE (Synth-pop band)

Where: Formed in Sheffield, 1977

Hits: Don’t You Want Me (1981), Human (1986), Mirror Man (1982), (Keep Feeling) Fascination (1983)

Did you know? The band is named after a group in the science-fiction board game ‘StarForce: Alpha Centauri’.

JOHN BARRY PRENDERGAST OBE (Composer)

Where: Born in York, 1933

Film scores: 11 James Bond soundtracks (including ‘Goldfinger’), Dances with Wolves (1990), Born Free (1966), and more

Did you know? He first learnt and began performing on the trumpet during his National Service in Cyprus.

Where: Formed in Sheffield, 1978

Did you know? ‘Common People’ was inspired by Cocker’s experience at a London art school, where wealthy students talked about ‘slumming it’ with working-class people.

Did you know? Drummer Rick Allen tragically lost his left arm in a car crash on New Year’s Eve, 1984, but he was determined to adjust so he could still play in the band.

ROBERT PALMER (Singer and songwriter)

Where: Born in Batley in 1949

Did you know? Palmer lived abroad for much of his life, in Malta, Switzerland, the Bahamas and more. Yet in his last interview, he said that Yorkshire, and his father, had given him “a healthy work ethic, and a straight-forwardness”, despite not living here for several decades.
