Yesterday I watched some intrepid sledgers hurtling down a very steep hill near where I live in Ribblesdale. I was tempted to have a go – up to seeing one of them somersault at great speed into a pile of frozen cow poo. This month’s Dalesman, which has just been published, features more winter sporting types trekking and skiing over Great Whernside during the last lot of snow in early December. The magazine also has a great tale of winter cycling during the 1950s. Meanwhile, I settled for a stress-free stroll with numerous breaks for photography and a pint of Yorkshire ale before heading home to do the ironing.
