What will be your beer of choice? Here are The Dalesman team’s picks, or rather our top twelve favourite Yorkshire breweries, ranked in order of our personal preferences.

12. NEEPSEND BREW CO

Initially based up the street from Ball Street Bridge (the inspiration for their logo), Neepsend is an independent brewery focusing on hop-forward pales.

Based in: Sheffield

Core beer: Neepsend Blonde

11. ABBEYDALE BREWERY

Established in 1996, this award-winning independent brewery produces over 220 brewer’s barrels per week, of up to 15 different beers at any one time!

Based in: Sheffield

Flagship beer: Moonshine Pale Ale

10. GREAT NEWSOME BREWERY

This family-run brewery uses local, homegrown ingredients (like malting barley and their own special strains of yeast) to produce award-winning, classic craft beers with a modern twist.

Based in: Hull

Original beer: Sleck Dust blonde beer

9. SAMUEL SMITH’S BREWERY

Yorkshire’s oldest brewery (est. 1758), Sam Smith’s are famed for being traditionally-run, still using Yorkshire Squares, made of slate, to ferment all its ales and stouts. The same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s.

Based in: Tadcaster

8. BLACK SHEEP BREWERY

With its original brewhouse still in use today, created by ‘black sheep’ Paul Theakston, this brewery brews exclusively with fresh Yorkshire Dales’ water extracted from limestone aquifers and aims to challenge convention.

Based in: Masham

7. BRADFIELD BREWERY

This family-run brewery, based on a busy working farm, uses the finest malts, traditional hops and natural spring water from their own borehole to produce a range of award-winning cask conditioned real ales.

Based in: Sheffield

6. KIRKSTALL BREWERY

Continuing a legacy of brewing left by the Cistercian monks of Kirkstall Abbey and the Kirkstall Brewery Company (1833-1983), this brewery brings the legacy of the past into their innovations of the present.

Based in: Leeds

5. SALTAIRE BREWERY

What started out as a microbrewery, dreamed up over a laboratory bench at a Brewlab course, is now a fully-fledged brewery that produces more than 5 million pints of beer a year.

Based in: Shipley

4. TETLEY’S BREWERY

Tetley’s was established in 1822 by Joshua Tetley, responding to a lack of successful breweries in the north of England at the time. Now it is a household name, yet they still stick to their roots by using the same strain of yeast developed by Joshua Tetley himself.

3. TIMOTHY TAYLOR’S BREWERY

The year 1858 saw a brewery open on Cook Lane, Keighley that is now, over 150 years later, one of the last independent brewers of its kind left in West Yorkshire.

Based in: Keighley

2. OSSETT BREWERY COMPANY

Formed by Bob Lawson, at the back of the Brewers Pride on Low Mill Road, Ossett Brewery has been perfecting the science of producing ales for over two decades.

Based in: Wakefield

Our favourites: White Rat hoppy pale ale, and Salt Jute Session IPA

1. THEAKSTON BREWERY

Nearly two centuries in the making, Theakston’s is an independent, family-run brewing company whose name and reputation is rightly celebrated across the globe. Cheers!
