I was at the White Rose Awards ceremony in Harrogate on Monday evening when the county’s tourism ‘Oscars’ were dished out. Welcome to Yorkshire, who organised the awards,  has done a tremendous job in raising the profile of the county not only in the rest of the country but all around the world, and Gary Verity and his team deserve great credit. Given this momentum it’s now up to the rest of the tourism industry in Yorkshire to take up the baton and make sure the county’s assets stay in the minds of potential visitors and investors. It’s no good sitting back and waiting for the visitors to come knocking on your door if you’re a B&B or hotel owner. Nor can paid-for attractions assume the queues will start to form just because Welcome to Yorkshire have spent millions on promoting the county. It’s time to seize the initiative, advertise what we have to offer* and dish out some good old fashioned Yorkshire hospitality to ensure that visitors return time and time again.
