For anyone who suffers from a little vertigo, as I do, peering down from the top of the keep at Richmond Castle will be bit of a knee trembler. It’s ‘only’ around a hundred feet above the town but it offers one of the best views in Swaledale. I was there one day this week researching a story for a future issue of Dalesman and although the weather was poor the outlook over the town and surrounding countryside was still impressive. You can easily spend a whole weekend in Richmond such is the extent of its history, heritage and places of interest – and that’s before you start heading further up Swaledale. The locals are very proud of their town and one chap I spoke to told me there were 57 places in the world called Richmond… but this was the oldest of them all – and the best. Can’t argue with that.
