Wow! I thought the Dales were spectacular in spring. I thought they were in summer and autumn too. But this week I was in Upper Wharfedale, a snowed-laden landscape where few visitors were present, only locals going about their daily chores. Farmers were making their way along narrow roads, made even narrower by snow stacked up against limestone walls, dishing out food to animals standing, in some bewilderment, knee-high in snow.

The snow would have seemed a nuisance or at least a minor inconvenience for real Dalesfolk – for me it was a chance to see a familiar friend wearing a different coat. The photo is taken near Deepdale with lonely and deserted Cowside Farm in the middle right.
