Flaming June… I write that as an expletive not as a reference to the work of Victorian art or description of the weather here in Yorkshire. Near home I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed the river Ribble so high or the flood plains so full in June. My sympathy goes to those who have been flooded in Calderdale and elsewhere and to all those who planned events to coincide with our glorious summer weather. Today would normally have been the date of the splendid Broughton Show sponsored by Dalesman but which has been postponed this year because of Olympic torch events. Looking at the Broughton Hall grounds yesterday I’m not sure it would have been able to go ahead anyway such has been the deluge. The show of course raises vital money for the Cave Rescue Organisation and the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association. To make up for the shortfall the two groups have been pulling out all the stops to raise funds by other means – please support them whenever you can… you just might need them in this weather on the fells.
