It was great to be at a sun-blessed Broughton Show yesterday for a double celebration. Not only does Dalesman sponsor the event to help bring in much needed cash for Cave Rescue Organisation and the Upper Wharfedale Fell rescue Association, but this year we also held our annual awards presentations there. Despite being worried about the rain during the week and on Saturday, the weather changed and attracted a bumper crowd for this quirky and unique country show.
In our own marquee many specially invited guests joined us to celebrate the handing over of three awards. The Yorkshireman of the Year Award, sponsored by Skipton Building Society, was presented to Northallerton-born mountaineer Alan Hinkes OBE who this year also helped raise much-needed funds for mountain rescue by climbing all 39 peaks of the original English shires in just eight days.
Entrepreneur of the Year, sponsored by Clarion Solicitors, went to Andrew Mear of Skipton who has renovated the town’s ancient Corn Mill, turning it into a green enterprise. The Artistic & Cultural Achievement Award, sponsored by Welcome to Yorkshire, was presented to Swaledale Festival which this year once again brought top class entertainment, art and visitors to the Dales. Read more about their achievements and the show in next August’s Dalesman. See also www.yorkshireruralawards.co.uk for photos from the event.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, just David Aynesworth flopping into the river during another failed attempt at the Birdman Challenge at this year’s show. Top, Alan Hinkes visits the Cave Rescue tent.
