I’m pleased to say that Yorkshire’s best-known artist, Ashley Jackson, as this week agreed to provide a regular piece for Dalesman magazine, starting later in the year. Ashley might be better known for his powerful images of the bleak Pennine areas in the south west of the county but he is also a great fan of the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the east coast, and he is looking forward to sharing his intimate thoughts and sketches from all around the county.
Visiting his gallery in Holmfirth gave me the chance to drive through some of those windswept Pennine dales and moors he depicts so vividly in his paintings. It’s easy to understand why artists, poets and writers– such as the Brontes – could be inspired here. It makes you wonder, too, how some of those hardy farmers make a living off such a wild landscape.
