His father was Squire Radciffe b 1783 m first wife Martha Hallarn, 2nd Mary Brear 1803 in Halifax. Squire d 1836.

His father was John Radcliffe b 1744/45, m Mary Buckley 1772 in Saddleworth. I believe John’s father was also John. I believe he was married twice. Might be Mary Platt and second unknown. Raine
My ancestor was Thomas Raine, born 1803, Yorkshire. He was arrested at Startforth and charged with sheep stealing in December 1831: tried at York Assizes March 17 1832: death sentence commuted to life in New South Wales. At the time of his departure from UK aboard Mary III, August 1832 his record states ‘Wife with father Thomas Langstaff/Longstaff(e) at Galgate’. At the time of his arrival in NSW, January 1833 he claimed to be married with one son. His convict indent further states he was a butcher and could milk.
It may be that the child died aged 10 months in October 1832 – a child is buried at Barnard Castle – records indicate ‘father transported’.
I would appreciate any info or tips on how to find the name of his wife and child, also his parents and any siblings.

Raine/Ellerker
My family origins are from Knaresborough, when i can trace my now hyphenated surname back to 1854 , for sure , and suggestions back to 1840.
It is the records pre 1837 i e parish, which hopefully can show when the two names became joined .i understand that the double surnames became fashionable around 1800 so that would be a start.
Linking the Ellerker part to one of the main branches of the family would be a real bonus .

Olive Patricia Reade
My mother Olive Patricia Reade had no birth certificate. According to her she was born in Leeds 18th June 1914, she was adopted at the age of six by Clara and Oswald Reade and lived in Selby, she talked of working in a bakery near a swing bridge. In her teens she moved to a house near Portsmouth to work as a domestic and married my father in 1942,her adoptive mother was present at the wedding but her father Oswald was declared deceased,I have not been able to find Clara and Oswald on any census. In 1950 Olive took myself and my two sisters to Yorkshire to visit her mother, who was then living in one of the railway cottages at Escrick station just south of York.Clara was supposedly housekeeper to the signalman Mr Haith. Olive died in 2008 aged 94, I would love to know more of her ancestry but with no birth certificate the search is proving very difficult. If anyone has any information i would be most grateful.

Many years ago there was a piece in ‘The Dalesman’ about Philip. He was apparently known on Stage as ” Little Phil” He used to be on the stage, I believe this was around the turn of the century. As a singer or a comedian not sure which. If anyone has anything about him it would be appreciated. I think the article would have been in the Dalesman maybe in the 1960’s.

Looking for information for a lovely photograph I have of Joseph, Tony and Terry Reed.   Their mother, Annie (nee McCurley) was one of the older sisters of my late father, Francis.  Annie sadly passed away too soon on 30th May 1959.   I am hoping to complete a small ‘immediate’ family journal and would be most grateful for any information.  Alas I don’t recall Annie’s husbands’ first name or exactly which part of Yorkshire they resided.

We are trying to trace the line of a ‘cousin’ of my grandfather, William Ewart Walmsley. My mother always referred to her as cousin Gwen, Dad’s cousin – but we are not sure how close a cousin she was. We think there were 2 sisters (Gwen and another) and a mother, Mrs Rhodes (we have a photo). We are unsure if the daughters married (we think not). Gwen was a very keen photographer and we have several of her photos (of my mother etc). She would have been alive around the late 1800s-1940s. The Rhodes family has connections with Newtons Dairy in Scarborough (info on that would also be welcome). Any help much appreciated.

Ricardson
I have been unablr to find the name of my maternal grandfather despite searching among births, deaths & marriages!
My grandmother was Martha Ricardson and my mother was born illegitamate at Eggleston nr Barnard Castle in 1905.
I have heard that her father was a gentleman of some wealth as he clearly undertook his responsibilities for her – despite living on a small farm near Bedale she had a horse, rode to hounds and always wore stylish clothes!
Her half brother was George Park – I wrote an article in your October 2008 edition about him reaching the age of 99 -he did reach 100 years but sadly died soon afterwards.
He could have lived in the Dent area – it is very sad that I may never know who my Grandfather was and to have family whom I have never met.

Richards
I’m trying to trace the family of Sgt Ronald Geoffrey Richards, born 14 May 1922 in Wakefield. He joined 57 Squadron on 6 november 1941 with my uncle and all 6 of the crew flew from RAF Feltwell on the night of 8 April 1942 never to be heard from again and MIA. I am tracing all the families as I have amassed a large amount of information about the raid and would like to share it with them. Sgt Richards’ family is the last family left to trace.
I’ve been unable to trace any parents/marriage details and it has been suggested that 2) he was adopted, b) he was using a false name or c) possibly illegitimate with unmarried parents or no known father.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone related to Sgt Richards or who knows/knew the family.

Richards/Bagley
I posted a message about 4 years ago. Since then I’ve researched my lineage even more – does it ever end? I’m trying to solve the mystery of how my 3x great grandmother Mary Bagley from Melsonby Yorkshire was able to meet Joseph Richards from Spon Lane, West Bromwich in Staffordshire in the early 1800’s…He was Corporal in the Napoleonic War and was wounded, came home to West Bromwich then died May 30, 1815. Prior to that he married Mary Bagley in Barnsley August 12, 1811. Was she a servant girl in West Bromwich in order for them to meet? is the date of their daughter, Harriet’s birth misinformation in order to way lay any gossip about their child’s legitimacy? Harriet’s birth date is online as April 27, 1813 but in the family bible that is with our family, she recorded her own birth date as April 27, 1812…there in lies my quest – was Mary pregnant and banished from West Bromwich to Melsonby? did Joseph sneak away to Barnsley to marry Mary in secret before he left to serve in the war? When he was severely wounded and sent home to West Bromwich did his parents refuse to allow Mary and the baby Harriet the right to see their son? Joseph died May 30, 1815…Mary died August 1, 1816 leaving Harriet age 4 an orphan to be raised by her mother’s sister, Catherine Bagley Trotter hence Harriet became Harriet Richards Trotter Dale who married Christopher Dale and emigrated to Canada in the mid 1800’s settling finally in Huron County building the brick home I grew up in! They were my 2x great grandparents. I think we are at time in our society to be more accepting of what happened with our ancestors – I am curious to find out the real story. Mary Bagley is buried in Melsonby and Joseph Richards is buried in West Bromwich. One day I hope to locate both their gravesites and plant a bit of Huron County soil from their daughter’s gravesite in Clinton, Ontario, Canada to each of theirs – to let them know what was lost to them for whatever reason, was not lost at all, but the beginning of a great story and heritage passed on. There are now thousands of descendants from the marriage of Harriet and Christopher…the little girl who was orphaned and endured great losses but overcame them in order to become the woman of substance I’m proud to call my 2x great grandmother. I wish there was a place to post pictures as I have a lovely portrait of Harriet and Christopher.

I am looking for any information on Leonard Richmond, born at Sawley around 1746, and Isabella Wearing, born at Craven-in-Linton. They had four children that I am aware of. The Roberts family were cormillers in Wentbridge at Wentbridge Mill, with some members of the family  on the 1851 census as of Kirk Smeaton. They were millers in Wentbridge for over 100 years.
Abraham Roberts married Elizabeth Newell in 1773, they had a number of children and one son, Benjamin, married Mary Hollings in 1805. His son, Edward Clarkson Roberts, married Sarah Kitchings, and they had a son called William Clarkson Roberts. Edward’s second marriage was to Grace Ellen Cleave, and they had a number children. One son, Edwin Roberts, moved to Australia and married Sarah Tee who was born in Wath upon Dearne. Their children were born in Victoria, Australia.
I am looking for further information on Henry, who married Kate, and had a family and lived Mickefield, Yorkshire, and Thomas Benjamin who married Annie Richardson(?) and had a family.

I would dearly like to trace my great-grandfather William Robinson. He married in Auckland NZ in January 1867 to Ruth McCleary of Lurgan, County Down, Ireland. At this time his profession is given as blacksmith. When he died in 1923 he was said to have been in the country 57 years – which places his arrival at approx 1864. On the records of his second marriage in 1918 his parents names are given as Joseph and Ann, father’s occupation iron founder. Place of birth was Barnsley, Yorkshire. In Ruth’s Irish family tree he is named as Sam Robinson.
I have been unable to discover which of the 200+ William Robinsons recorded as having traveled to NZ he may be – is any one missing him from their English family tree?  Any help gratefully received.

I very much want to find my half brother, Brian Robinson, born in 1940, or perhaps 1941, near Huddersfield/Dewsbury area? Our mother was Ruth Irene Robinson (nee Gooch). The marriage failed and she moved to Norfolk where I was born November 19, 1944 at Tan Office Farm, Saxthorpe. (My father’s name was Arthur Haigh.) I believe Brian, my half brother, remained in Yorkshire and was raised by the Robinson family. However, our mother returned to live in Yorkshire (Brighouse), with me, my father Arthur and my younger sister, Patricia, around 1949. Our mother died there in an auto accident when I was 17. I don’t know if Brian was ever made aware of our mother’s death, or the circumstances, and whether he even knows I exist. I am looking for the family tree of the Robinson’s of Countersett Hall, Wensleydale, Yorkshire circa 1600’s through 1700’s and beyond.I am trying to find a link from possibly Richard Robinson, or a relation of his (of Countersett Hall, a Quaker of the mid 1600’s; his house was a Friends meeting place) to a large Robinson family who were of Liverpool but who originated in the ‘dales.’ A William Robinson, a bookseller, was said to have been ‘A dalesman who came down from the Lakes to Liverpool’ at the end of the 1700’s. He was married to Eleanor Fothergill in 1784 in Liverpool. (I also believe Eleanor was descended from the large Fothergill family, whose origins were also in Quakerism. I base this theory on reading somewhere the fact ‘Fothergill’s’ attended Friends meetings at the Robinson home of Countersett Hall in the mid 1600’s). William and Eleanor had several children, including my next ancestor down, William Fothergill Robinson, Broker /proprietor of Liverpool; him and his siblings and several of their descendents, were bankers, barristers, academics and such like of Liverpool (and beyond). Any information tying up the Robinson’s of Wensleydale (circa 1600’s +) to the Robinson’s of Liverpool from 1802 onwards, would be most appreciated.

I am looking for information on the Sheffield family from the Huttons Ambo/Malton area. William Sheffield (b. 1762) married Sophia Ward (b. 1762). They had several children. My ancestor is their son, Thomas B Sheffield (b. 1797). He emigrated to the US (first Kentucky, later New York) about 1819. His oldest brother was William Sheffield (b. 1787). He stayed in Yorkshire and was a surgeon. He eventually moved to Farmanby. Thomas had a sister, Sophia Sheffield (b. 1799), who also emigrated to New York. She never married and became a naturalized US citizen (fairly rare for a woman at that time). Her occupation on a US census is listed as “lady”. Another brother (? unsure of their relationship), Richard H Sheffield (b. 1789), came to New York around 1819. Another sister, Elizabeth Sheffield (b. 1791) married a William Robinson (b. 1786) and emigrated to New York with their 6 children. Another sister, Sarah Sheffield (b. 1793) married a Robert Sutton (b. 1790). They stayed in Yorkshire, but their children emigrated to New York.

To the best of my knowledge, this family was associated with the parish church of St. Michaels, Old Malton. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping to make a trip to Yorkshire from the US next summer. I’d love to have a firm grasp of where to start my research.

Does anyone have any information on Wilfred Allanson Robinson or his father Francis Allanson Robinson?  I have no idea where either of them were born or died and do not know who Wilfred’s mother is.  The only information I have is from the marriage certificate between Wilfred Allanson Robinson & Joan Alderson B: 1920 & D: 1983 (my maternal grandparents) who married in 1941 in Leeds.  The age of Wilfred on his marriage certificate puts his year of birth circa 1918 with an occupation of warehouse man.  The marriage certificate lists Francis Allanson Robinson as his father (occupation listed as Tailor’s Manager).  They divorced in 1956 when my mother was very young.  Wilfred was a POW during WW2 – but no further information on this either.
