Lacy
I am researching the family of 3411 Private A B Lacy of the Koyli, who died on 29 September 1918, aged 41 years, and who is buried at Kirby Wharfe, near Tadcaster. Arthur Benjamin Lacy was born in Kirby Wharfe and was married at Coxwold in August 1905 to Ellen Blakey of Coxwold. Ellen died in March 1968 at Stockton on Tees. Their eldest child was Francis, who died in 1989 at Spilsby, Lincs; others include, Joseph, Kathleen, Benjamin, Arthur and Edith. In the 1950s/60s Edith (married name not known) was living in the York district. Twins David and Daphne have been mentioned, but I do not know where they fit into the family. Any information welcomed on this or any Blakey family from Coxwold, Crayke and Terrington.

I am seeking contact with the descendants or relatives of my grandfather, William Henry Lambert who was born at Littlethorpe Pottery, near Ripon, in the early 1890s. Is there anyone out there in UK who has done a Lambert Family tree/history which shows up this person? I am planning on visiting the UK in either 2012 or 2013 and would love to meet up with some of my blood relatives there.

I am a United States Naval Officer looking for assistance with tracing my family history in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England. I am currently stationed in California and therefore need assistance with obtaining electronic or hard copy records which are maintained by the Borthwick Institute. Specifically, I am looking for Birth, Death, Marriage and Bishop/Parish transcript records from St Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.

I have traveled to Pateley Bridge and unexpectedly found the headstone of my great-great-great-Grandfather and Grandmother by the entrance to St Cuthbert church. However, I did not have time on my travels to visit the Borthwick Institute to search the detailed church records. Is there any way you could assist me with this? I will gladly pay for any materials, as well as your time and effort.

I collected the following information during my visit to Pateley Bridge in 2005 which should be useful if you are able to assist me. Headstone in the front of St Cuthbert’s:

“SACRED” To The Memory of Ellen Jane Lancaster. Daughter of John and Jane Lancaster, at Dridiging Box (Dridging Box was the name of their house, torn down in 1963 to widen the road into Pateley Bridge), near Patley Bridge, Who Departed This Life. Oct 22 1832 Aged 7 years. Also, Mary Dale Wife of John Dale, Daughter of the above. Who Departed This Life. March 6th 1837 Aged 27 years. Also of the above named John Lancaster. Who died February 21, 1854. Aged 76 Years. Also of Jane. Relict of the above John Lancaster. Who died February 23, 1856. Aged 77 years.

Langstaff
I have traced my family tree so far back to Wakefield and potentially the Leeds area. Looking for any information, old records and anything interesting. Key people I have found and would like any further info if people have it are: 1) George Langstaffe (b) 1789 in Wakefield. His father was Joseph Langstaff. I believe the family may of had a barbers in the town centre for a number of years. 2) His father Joseph was born around 1763. His father I believe may have been a Daniel Langstaff (b) approx 1720. Maybe Holbeck. Daniel married a Dorothy Leathey. Anything on these would be great. 3) I know George Langstaff had a son, George W Langstaff who was also a barber. The family moved out of Wakefield. I think they went to Leeds first, followed by Sheffield, then onto York.

Lawton
I am researching my friend’s family line of Lawton and have come across quite a conundrum. Elizabeth Lawton born 1847 Tadcaster (mother Margaret Lawton – no father named). I have managed to trace her life via census records: in 1851 she appears as living in Wighill, Tadcaster, under the name LAUGHTON,  f: JOHN MACDONALD b 1806 Ireland (no mother on census) and sister ELLEN LAWTON b 1837 Tadcaster. On checking the 1841 census I found John Macdonald, ELLEN MACDONALD b 1837 and ELIZABETH MACDONALD b 1841 (think this child died) and a MARGARET b 1816 Ireland (don’t know if this is John’s wife or not as she appears at the end of his household’s names).  Have got ELIZABETH’s borth cert (no father named) and have found ELLENS’s birth reg and she was registered as ELLEN MACDONALD LAWTON (still awaiting her birth cert). By 1861 ELIZABETH is a ‘boarder’ at a lodging house run by the Westons (she was only aged 4 at the time) and was not with any of her family (Ellen having married HENRY JOHN TAYLOR). The 1871 census shows ELIZABETH as a servant in the CUSSANS household. She gives birth to a son, ROBERT in 1881 (illegitimately) and for some reason he is left with a MARY TODD and her granddaughter FLORRIE TODD. I cannot find ELIZABETH LAWTON on any 1881 census. The 1891 shows that ELIZABETH (now married in 1883) is with her husband THOMAS RAMSDEN and his family from a previous marriage, and her son ROBERT is now back living with her and is listed as ‘adoptive son’.  By 1901 Robert is now named as ROBERT RAMSDEN, and ELIZABETH is still alive.  This search has been somewhat confusing as I can’t understand where John Macdonald comes into it and is her mother, MARGARET, a single lady having 2/3 children out of marriage, or was MARGARET LAWTON a married lady.  Anyone who has any knowledge of the Lawton family please contact me and we can swap notes etc.

Leach
I am seeking information on the Leach family. Elizabeth Leach was born in Wilsden, near Bradford Yorkshire in 1810. She married Jonas Rhodes on 23/05/1831. They had four children: George b: 1831, Joshua b: 1834, Matilda b: 1837 (my great-grandmother) and Caleb b: 1847. Elizabeth died in 1882.
Does anyone know Elizabeth’s parents’ names? Did she have any brothers and/or sisters?  I believe there is a connection with the Leach family and Hull shipping (cargo). Will greatly appreciate ANY leads to follow.

It is believed that she died around 1956, but of this I can find no record. She is now known to have been my great, great grandmother. Or is their son John out there somewhere?

I am searching to find anybody who is related to Charles William Leatham married to Elizabeth Ann Wright; their children being Eveline, Gertrude, (Amy) May, Rosie, Freda & Edward Leatham. Also if you knew of Thomas Leatham (father to Charles); my mother was Helen Rose Leatham, her mother Freda Leatham (married name Cawthra). My Great Uncle Edward (Leatham) always mentioned that his grandad, Charles, was in World War 1. We had been searching for information on Charles Leatham as a soldier in WW1 and of his brothers and sisters if he had any but due to the passing away of Edward Charles this year, 8th May to Cancer our search had come to a pause. So any information would be appreciated.

Leckonby
In July’s Reader’s Club, I see in the letter from Joan Leathley a reference to James Leckonby. My great uncle George Leckonby Sayles, who spent most of his adult life in the Rotherham area, would seem to have some connection with this family as it was not uncommon to include a family name as one of the names given to a child. Both my father and sister had Howard included in their names. It was my grandmother’s maiden name. My great uncle was born about 1873. Perhaps one of your readers may know of any connection between the two families.

Ledger
I am trying to find anything about my great great grandfather Richard Ledgar born 1813 South Elmsall. He was a Tallow Chandler in Barnsley in the 1800’s as was his brother Thomas born 1811, but he was a Tallow Chandler in Wakefield, he seems to disappear of some of the Census, probably due to mis-spelling of surname. Richard married Ann Buckley, they seemed to live in Barnsley most of the time. They must have had a business
in Cheapside, Barnsley when some of their children were born. Any information will most gratefully received.

I am trying to find any information about William Lee, born 1775 in Leeds. His parents were Polly (Farrer) and Joshua Lee. Joshua was a breeches maker and hosier in Leeds (1770-1789 at least).
William had a brother called Joshua and sister Elizabeth.
William Lee moved to France in 1824, having bought an estate there. He did not marry. He died in 1853 and requested to be buried in Beckett Street Cemetery, Leeds.
I can find no trace of William Lee from the time of his birth to his arrival in France. If anyone can tell me anything about his early life and business interests in Leeds it would fill in a mysterious gap in my family’s history.

A Commemorative Service was held at St Eunan’s Cathedral, Raphoe, Ireland 29th May 2010.

Anyone recognising the Lee family details on his posting or has an enquiry can now contact myself Matthew Lee on Lmtthw@aol.com

I originally contacted Frederick some years ago after reading his posting on here & believed we shared the same Lee Family. We determined we did indeed, sharing Thomas Lee as being a common direct ancestor of ours. Frederick descends from Samuel and myself from his brother James. I’m grateful I had the chance to meet Frederick, all be it just the once when he was over in England & he enjoyed very much his Family History & we shared a lot of information communicating by email. I was hoping to meet up with him more as he was planning to move back to England & I really sadly miss this opportunity now.

Leng
Martin Braithwaite was born Abt. 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb February 01, 1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England North Newbald, England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this is a second marriage for Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of Yorkshire). Ann and John Leng’s son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married August 12, 1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick register, Walkington, England. By banns.

Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means “the site of the Oak Trees”. As well as being a family name in Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs. Acombs can be traced back to the 1600’s in the village of Long Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England (also have Christening June 12, 1797).

More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite: Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England.

Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial: Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830, (Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark, b. January 03, 1834, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. v. Emma Jane Clark, b. April 22, 1835, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vi. Matilda Clark, b. June 04, 1837, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vii. Maria Clark, b. May 26, 1838, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England.

Le Resche
Part of my Le Resche family moved from Halifax to Leeds in the 1820’s. Henry, Sarah, and youngest daughter Elizabeth. Possibly also other daughters that did not marry. They were Wesleyan.

In the Leeds Directory of 1822 they are living in Meadow Lane Bridge End, and Henry is a merchant. In Halifax he used to be a bookkeeper. Their youngest daughter Elizabeth Le Resche married in St Peters by bond and license to a John Iving on October 31st 1831.

As it is pre 1837, I am unable to find out whether her father was still alive at this stage, and Leeds despite having the details off the IGI have been unable despite the bond in hand been able to find the entry in the church records. I had hoped this would show me who gave her away or who her witnesses were. Or if her father was already dead.

In 1834 the Trade Directory for Leeds, has Sarah Le Resche at 1 King Street, running a ladies academy. (Her father in law and brother in law and second son, were all School Masters in Birmingham.) So Henry must have died by this time.

The 1841 census has her still at this address as a widow with her daughter Elizabeth living there and a grandson of 5 plus servants. A search for John Irvine has him boarding somewhere with marital status crossed through. So perhaps the marriage had broken down.

In 1837 Elizabeth dies near Halifax, and in 1849 Sarah dies in Sowerby Halifax at her son’s home attended by a daughter Anne who never married and was a companion to a rich widow for over 30 years. Sarah’s son was a tenant of Willow Hall there.
1851 has the grandson back with his father now classed a widower. I presume they moved back in the mid 1840’s as Sarah’s health failed and her youngest daughter sadly died.

I have been able to ascertain that there were 2 King Streets in Leeds. Both still exist? I am presuming her address was the innermost. The Meadow Lane address, is that close to the centre of Leeds? I have been unable to find any old maps of Leeds at that time that might help me see where they lived.

I descend from their second son, also a Henry, who was actually raised by an Uncle and Aunt in Birmingham. We know this as contact with the Uncles wife has verified this. Henry was born in Halifax to Henry and Sarah and christened at the South Parade Wesletan Chapel there. They had been unable to find a christening for him at St. Martins Church Birmingham, where their relative Susannah Hidson had married Samuel Le Resche. It was also a bond and license marriage as Samuel was not C of E. They had no children if their own. We cannot locate any in the church registers. But through contact with descendants of the Hidson family they have been able verify that he was raised in Birmingham. And that he grew up there and spoke French in the family home. It is likely his father Henry (Halifax/Leeds) also spoke French.

(Henry Senior and Samuel’s father was called Charles He was a French School master and also a SchoolMaster in other subjects according to Birmingham Trade Directiories of 1776 to 1780.)
Both boys had been in born in Halifax and christened there in Halifax at the South Parade Chapel then the family moved to Birmingham in 1776.

(I know little else anout Charles, not his wife’s name etc. or where he was born as I cannot find him in older church records in Halifax, so he must have moved there from elsewhere)
Henry Senior then returning to his place of birth Halifax to and work and marry by bond and licence in 1792. So maybe this is what Sarah Le Resche taught?

Anyone with details of online old maps etc would be gratefully received. Or anyone who may know more of what Henry did as a Merchant.

Leslie
My grandfather’s name is Frederick Lionel Leslie. He was born in London, England in the year 1848 and died in Honolulu, Hawaii in the year 1910. I have been trying so hard to search for the records of his parents. Unfortunately I do no know their names other than their last name (Leslie). Is there anyway you can help me find their records? I’m beginning to wonder if my grandfather was even born in London, but there is no doubt that he was born in Europe somewhere.

I would be so indebted to you if you could help me. I’ve been trying to find their records, and, I just cannot find it…so, your assistance will be so appreciated; much more than you can realize. Mahalo nui loa

Levi
My great-great-grandmother Sarah Levi was said to be born in Sheffield about 1833. She appears on the 1851 census for Sheffield as 18yrs, living in a boarding house with younger sisters Martha and Esther. Her father was said to be Henry Levi born in Wakefield. He was a widower in 1850 when he remarried. Sarah’s mother may have been Marion or Mary Ann. I am trying to find her death date which hopefully would give her name or perhaps a marriage entry for around 1830. Henry’s father is given as Benjamin Levi on his 1850 marriage certificate. I have done a bit of research into this family but there are so many loose ends!

Long/Beard
I am the oldest granddaughter of John Long born 1904. His brother Edward married Gwendoline Wilhelmina Gertrude Beard. When my grandfather and his wife Ellen came to Australia in 1968 he left the family bible with his sisters. When they past on my Uncle Edward and Aunty Gwen took the bible with them. I am searching for that bible. I know that they had it as my Aunty Ethel my grandfathers other sister in law (now passed away) told me in 1975. I would like it back as to be able to pass it on to its rightful owner my brother so that it can remain in the Long family. If anyone can help please notify me by email. Thanking you ann

Longbottom
I am trying to trace my grandfather’s siblings and their descendants who were born to Joseph Longbottom (1862-1942) and Susannah Ramsden (his first wife) in the Morley area of Leeds. His name was Ellis (1885-1965). I have all his siblings names, as far as I am aware they were (in order of birth): Emmanuel, Ellis, Horrace, Lily, Bertie and Watson. One other researcher has also named a younger brother to them all as Joseph, but my grandfather (Ellis) only ever talked about his youngest brother Watson. Has anyone got any further information?

Longbottom
I would like to find out more information about my Great Grandmother May Longbottom, born 9th April 1912. I was born on her birthday when she was 63 years old.

I believe she was one of a large family and could have had as many as 8 or 9 brothers and sisters! I would like to visit the place where she was born. In her early life she was believed to work in a mill possibly in the Shipley area? She married when she was fairly young and is believed to have left Yorkshire by her early twenties.
Any information would be gratefully received
Thank you.

Longstaff / Langstaff
Thomas Longstaff/Langstaff was known to be at Galgate in 1831/32. His daughter (?) married name (Raine) was staying with him at this time. Is Thomas Longstaff/Langstff or his daughter part of your family tree? Longstaff/Langstaff married Thomas Raine sometime before May 1832 – the marriage apparently produced a son (?) Raine. I would appreciate any information about (1) Thomas Longstaff /Langstaff of Galgate (1830’s); (2) his married daughter (unknown) Raine; (3) his son-in-law, her husband, Thomas Raine, born 1803, YKS; Thomas Raine & (unk) Raine’s son born pre May 1832.

Lonsdale
I am searching for other great grandchildren (etc) of Robinson Lonsdale and his wife, Elizabeth Ann Bailey. Robinson had a house-painting business in Keighley. He lived from 1840 to 1929. Elizabeth was born in 1848. Their children were Lydia, 1866, Greenwood, 1869, Charles Henry, 1871, Edgar, 1873, Thomas, 1878, Maria (my grandmother), 1879, and Mary, 1879. Maria said that her mother died when she was still a young girl. So perhaps there were other children by Robinson’s second wife, another Elizabeth. I do have a lovely wedding photograph on which I can name Robinson Lonsdale, Maria and Mary Lonsdale Sharpe (my mother), Lydia and Ben Crossley, Agnes (Crossley) and Henry Richardson, and the bride and groom who are Ethel Crossley and Robert Mason. There are 42 other guests. This was taken in 1920 in Leeds.
