Kay
I am trying to find out more information about my great-great-great-great-grandfather, Ralph Kay, born circa 1747. He died in Scorton, but no evidence that he was born there.
He married one of/both Margaret Simpson and Elizabeth ?.
Ralph had a number of children:
Thomas Kay baptised 26/11/1769 in Bolton on Swale;
Ralph Kay baptised 22/05/1774;
John Kay baptised 22/05/1774;
Margaret Kay baptised 01/08/1779;
John Kay baptised 17/06/1782;
William Kay baptised 24/04/1785

Could there be a family connection between these people (or the descendants) and the Kay’s of Ellerton on Swale, or the Kay’s of Danby Wiske? For example: George and Elizabeth Kay, farmer, Ellerton on Swale had two daughters – Jane Kay baptised 25/08/1822; Elizabeth Kay bapt 15/08/1824

And what of the following baptisms in Danby Wiske:
John, son of John Kay and Dorothy (née Lowson) baptised 03/01/1733
Francis, son of John Kay and Dorothy (née Lowson) baptised 06/12/1741
Thomas, son of John Kay and Mary baptised April 1744
Margaret, daughter of John Kay and Mary baptised 29/04/1750

And has anyone any thoughts on the following in Scorton:
Ann Kay buried 13/04/1816 Scorton aged 1 year
Margaret Kay buried 25/09/1820 Scorton, infant
Mary, daughter of Elizabeth Kay of Scorton baptised 30/11/1754

I would also love information on his parents, George and his wife Mary Ann Alice (neé Rylah) who married on May 5th, 1844. This surname goes back to Andrew Mercer Kilvington, a Linen Weaver Free 1716 (burried Feb. 13, 1769. Does he go back further? Thank you for any information.

Kirby
Looking for information on Thomas Kirby born about May 1820 in Helmsley (probably Carlton) to John Kirby and wife Ann (Nancy) Simpson. The family moved from Carlton/Helmsley to Osgoodby near Thirkleby. Thomas died in 1893 and is buried in Great Thirkleby. He married Frances Peacock, and I know of many of their descendants. I believe John Kirby was born in the 1790s to Roger KIRBY but would appreciate it if anyone can confirm this or tell me otherwise. There are many Kirbys in Carlton, Helmsley and Pickering!

Kirkbright
Benjamin Kirkbright was the father of Wilfred, Veronica, Lizzy, Agnes, Steven and Francis.
Mary married William Carroll and was the mother of Evelyn, Billy, Vincent, Margaret, Joe, Irene, Philomena, Agnes, Anthony, Alan and Phillip. She was also the grandmother of Denis (Dan) Pluck!
John was the father of Benny, Joe, George and Tommy. He was also the grandfather of Billy and Vince Kirkbright (father Joe).
Margaret married William O’Donnell and was the mother of Agnes, Theresa, Lucy, Helen, Norah, Winnie and Joan.
Benjamin was the head of the family and had lost a leg in a factory accident when working at Pateley Bridge. He converted to the Catholic faith on his deathbed although his wife Bridget said that he feared neither God nor the Devil!
Bridget (nee O’Sullivan) came to England from Ireland at the time of the famine of 1842. When crossing the Irish Sea by ferry she was robbed and arrived in Liverpool penniless and only able to speak gaelic.
There is a photo dated 1892. Bemjamin senior was my great grandfather and Benjamin junior was my grandfather.
I’m trying to make the link with the family move from Pately Bridge to industrial teesside (South Bank) my grandfather, I think is mentioned in the 1902 census aged 29 in the parish of Coatham Redcar North Yorkshire. Any help please?

Kirkbright
My name is Christopher John Kirkbright. I was born in Werris Creek NSW Australia on the 9th February 1953. My mother’s maiden name was Ethel Mary Riley. She was married to my father whose name was John Kirkbright (also known as Jack Kirkbright) in Australia some time about 1947 or 48. John Kirkbright was a seaman in the British Merchant Navy during WWII. He served on an oil tanker that was sunk by a Japanese (I believe) submarine during the war. He was one of a handful of survivors of that attack. When rescued he was brought to Australia where he remained at least until the time we lost contact with him. I have a brother named Brian Leonard Neville Kirkbright born in 1955. We lost contact with my father in about 1957 when I was 4 years old. I have never had any contact with my father or any of the members of my family. I would dearly love to have contact with any of his family and to find out if my father is still alive (though he would have to be very old indeed!) or where he might be buried. My intuition tells me he may have had other children after my brother and I, maybe even here in Australia. I am keen to make contact with any brother/s or sister/s that I may have. If anyone has any knowledge that they can share with me please contact me through the email address provided. I will be eternally grateful for any assistance you can give in my quest to find any of my father’s family.

Kitchingman
In researching the origins of my surname I was informed by one of the Heralds that we came from monastic kitchen men – ordinary cooks were called Cook, but the monastic ones were named Kitchynman. If this is really so, and the earliest record for a Kitchynman I have is in 1352, just after the Black Death, could this mean that we originated in Rievaulx, Jervaulx or Byland, all of which are centred in the North Riding from which area we seem to descend? Idle speculation perhaps but can any reader confirm this assertion?

Kneeshaw
I recently received details from my cousin in Manchester about my grandfather John Burland’s funeral in 1940 at Horsforth. In the list of mourners it mentions a number of persons I had never come across before, this being Mr M Kneeshaw (step-brother) and also 4 ladies, Mrs Long, Mrs Chadwick, Mrs Baker and Mrs Longfellow (nieces) and Mr R Kneeshaw (Nephew). I have been researching my family history for about 20 years but wasn’t aware of my grandfather Burland having a step-brother or his descendants.
If anyone has any details on these people who may still be alive, although it is 70 years since the funeral, or their descendants could they please get in touch with me.

Knight
I’m trying to find information on a James or Jac Knight, born around 1832 in Sheffield, although in the 1891 census he gives his birthplace as Sculcoates. First record of him is in 1868, when he marries Jane Phillips in Swansea. He then turns up the 1871 census with Jane and baby son Venox, in Liskeard, Cornwall. By 1881, he’s in Jane’s home town of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, where he stays with his family until his death in 1892. Would live to find out more about the yorkshire side if the family, but have hit brick walls with 1841, 51 and 61 censuses.

Looking for information about the family of Knowles living at Pateley Bridge from the early 1800s to the middle 1800 when James’s son John Edwin appears to have shifted and in 1881 is listed as a single boarder Mason appears to have shifted some time later. I know he married a Mary Ann Brown, no idea when or where, and went to New Zealand. They had a son Richard (my half sisters grandfather) in 1889, not sure where he was born either.
Some of the family are buried at St Cuthbert’s Church, Pateley Bridge and as there are only two headstones there I can’t imagine the family living a long time in the area.
