Regular readers of Dalesman will recall a story in my diary last year about the eco-pod… a temporary construction which is placed inside a barn and used as holiday accommodation or office. It is one way to help preserve the ancient barns of the dales. Well this week the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has approved the temporary use of a free-standing pod inside an isolated barn on the Bolton Abbey Estate. For the next year it will be occupied occasionally by experts from Bath-based architects Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios who will test its viability as a place to stay or work, and the project will be monitored by conservation experts. Our barns and walls are extremely important elements of our landscape and heritage and anything which helps preserve them has to be welcomed. The building in my photo (near Hawes in Wensleydale) is a fine example of a dales barn in use.
