The editor of Dalesman spending one of his days off traveling on a train through the Dales might be considered a bit of a busman’s holiday. But when friends said they’d never been on the Settle-Carlisle line I jumped at the chance of joining them on a day trip to the North West. I never tire of the journey – well, in fine weather anyway. The Three Peaks looked magnificent and as always had me wondering how such construction could have taken place with just primitive tools and hard graft. The view down Dentdale, as the line takes in England’s highest mainline station, must be the best in the country. Mallerstang was as inviting as ever and the lush, blossoming Eden Valley with the northern Pennines towering over the scene to the east was truly picturesque. My friends were impressed too but I could see that my constant commentary and boasting about Yorkshire was starting the wear a little thin… Don’t miss June’s magazine (on sale this week) in which TV weatherman Jon Mitchell is also on a train – this time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Also, we are running a competition to win steam train tickets worth £500.
