It may not be considered pc nowadays, but sometimes a good drive around the Dales is called for. Two visiting friends asked me to take them around some of the western dales at the weekend as they’d never really ventured further west than Malham. We travelled through Settle and Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Ribblehead, over to Dent and Sedbergh. From there we took in the eastern part of the Howgills before cutting across that gorgeous little road to Mallerstang and Pendragon Castle then on to Hawes – not before stopping off at picturesque Cotter Force. We then headed back  towards Ingleton, turning off on the back road to Clapham. It’s a great drive not only for the amazing scenery but also the places of interest, pubs and tea rooms en route. If you can afford the petrol and the parking fees – and your conscience allows you – give it a go.  For those tut-tutters among you, see this month’s issue of Dalesman in which we offer ideas about planning car-free days out in the Dales.
