One of the reasons why I love the Dales so much is the way rapidly changing light can create a new picture at very turn. This week I saw some exceptional conditions along one of my favourite roads – between Stainforth in Ribblesdale to Halton Gill in Littondale. Aided by strong winds the light on this farmhouse and walls at the foot of Penyghent altered the mood by the minute. Further on, Silverdale, where limestone outcrops dominate, also took on several new forms. Then, before the drop down to Halton Gill, that tremendous view down Littondale towards Wharfedale appeared almost like one of those time-lapse movies as the clouds passed swiftly above. It was a case of buy one get three free – what a bargain.
