Settle Station, looking like the set from a remake of a 1930s romantic film… but this is no makeover for film-makers or TV. It’s for the passengers and staff. Last Friday the refurbished gateway to the famous Settle-Carlisle line was officially opened following an impressive project managed by the S-C Railway Development Company. For the first time, the station has running hot water thanks to three biomass stoves, plus a toilet and kitchen for the staff. There are new windows, low energy lighting, insulation, passenger toilets, screens and even free wi-fi internet access. This superb small station is a tourist attraction in itself and those who helped in the refurbishment deserve great credit.
Last Monday saw the last of the region’s major agricultural shows at Pateley Bridge. The Nidderdale Show is a truly local event when work seems to come to a complete stop up and down the dale and residents outnumber the offcumdens. There’s much shaking of hands, hearty greetings and farming chat. The rain seemed to be falling all around but stayed off the showground until late afternoon but not the kind to putting off this hardy bunch.
