I’ve just spent a couple of days in the Malvern Hills of Worcestershire and Herefordshire doing work for one of my other magazines, The Countryman. It’s a very pleasant area offering widespread views from the hill tops across arable and cattle grazing land. But as always I was happy to be home, so first thing Sunday morning, with a bright clear sky beckoning, I wandered around the lower slopes of Penyghent reminding myself of what I’d been missing. Here was a very different landscape where sheep, cattle and wild moorland dominate instead of those great swathes of bright yellow rapeseed. The air seemed fresher and the cheery greetings from walkers enforced the fact that I was back in Yorkshire. Two days away from the Dales is more than enough for anyone!
