Freezing temperatures last week saw Yorkshire with its winter coat on. The Dales looked stunning. Hoar frost clung onto the trees and hedges, normally muddy tracks were rock hard and breath from the cattle and sheep was visible from hundreds of yards away. I took this picture on the narrow road between Cracoe and Thorpe in Wharfedale on my way to look at the old camp and outdoor centre at Linton (see February’s magazine). Many people from the West Riding will recall staying at Linton Camp but it is in a sad state now after, as seems to be the case with many outdoor activities centres, being either under funded or, because of stricter health and safety regulations and fewer willing teachers, underused. It’s a shame that so many youngsters are missing out on a unique education in the Dales.
