Welcome to Yorkshire has made history at the Chelsea Flower Show, becoming the first exhibitor to win the People’s Choice Award four years running.
Le Jardin de Yorkshire, inspired by the Grand Départ of the Tour de France which starts in the county in 2014, won the public vote straight off the back of claiming a Silver-Gilt award in the artisan garden category.
This year’s win mirrors the success of Welcome to Yorkshire’s previous gardens – The Brontes’ Yorkshire Garden, the Art of Yorkshire and the Rhubarb, Custard and Crumble.
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: ‘‘We are thrilled to have made history in the year that Chelsea Flower Show turns 100. We have won People’s Choice every year we have exhibited which just shows the affection people have for Yorkshire and our entries. The public’s enthusiasm for Le Jardin has been evident all week and we are proud that they have been moved enough to vote us their favourite.”
Alistair Baldwin, the garden’s designer, said: ‘‘It was our intention to capture what the world will see when the Grand Départ comes to the county, and it’s great that the public has responded so positively to what we have done. Hopefully, it will inspire more people to come and experience Yorkshire’s stunning landscapes firsthand and to line the route of the Tour in 2014.”
Le Jardin incorporates iconic images of the Yorkshire landscape that spectators will see during the 2014 Grand Départ. These include a flock of wire sheep by Whitby sculptor Emma Stothard, a drinking trough engraved with the names of towns along the route, a wildflower meadow made from recycled textiles and the country’s rarest orchid; the Lady’s Slipper which had its own team of security to protect it.This entry was posted in Featured - Home, News, News/Blog.
