I am trying to find the ancestors of Richard Waddy, 1734-1813, who is buried
at Nunmonkton, Yorkshire, and was for 40 years master of the charity school
there. His wife, Jane's, dates are 1740-1826. I know quite a lot about
Richard Waddy's descendants, of whom I am one, but nothing about his antecedents,
and it would help solve a family mystery if I could find out who his father
was, and where he was born? I have
now lived in Yorkshire for 2 years, but haven't come across any Waddys
so far! Anybody out there?

I was given old photographs and recently had one person identified as Tommy Taylor,
a well known local Rugby Player. I am curious to know how, or if, he was connected

I was born and bred at Todmoden but in the late C19 the family were living
in Sowerby Bridge. My g.g.g.f. John Waller was married at Halifax P. Ch
but he had been born at Giggleswick in 1806. His grandfather Joshua Waller
was said to be of Clapham when he married at Horton in Ribblesdale in 1750.
He should have been baptised C1718 but I have been unable to find the evidence
in parish registers.

Charles Waller was born in Long Riston, East Yorkshire about
1860 according to census but I can find no trace of him in the parish
records of that time or in the GRO. He married Eliza Wilson of Hutton
Cranswick in 1889 when he claimed to live in Middleton. His father
is recorded as being William Waller, an agricultural labourer. Charles
was also a farm servant. Has anyone else studied the Wallers of East
Yorkshire? Charles and Eliza's son, George William, was my husband's
grandfather.

I am trying to find any information on William G Ward (Mayor of
Nottingham 1871/72), recently my Grandmother (married name
Lee) died and in her belongings was a book of photographs dated
1870. The only photograph with a name on it is that of William
Ward although I believe that all of the photographs are of
that family. I am not sure how these photographs have come
to be in my possession, I believe that many years ago a relative
of mine (surname Tatum?) either came from the Ward family or
married into the Ward family. Any information would be fantastic
as I would like to return the photographs to someone who would
probably enjoy them more than myself.

I am looking for information on the Sheffield family from the Huttons
Ambo/Malton area. William Sheffield (b. 1762) married Sophia
Ward (b. 1762). They had several children. My ancestor is their
son, Thomas B Sheffield (b. 1797). He emigrated to the US (first
Kentucky, later New York) about 1819. His oldest brother was
William Sheffield (b. 1787). He stayed in Yorkshire and was a
surgeon. He eventually moved to Farmanby. Thomas had a sister,
Sophia Sheffield (b. 1799), who also emigrated to New York. She
never married and became a naturalized US citizen (fairly rare
for a woman at that time). Her occupation on a US census is listed
as "lady". Another brother (? unsure of their relationship),
Richard H Sheffield (b. 1789), came to New York around 1819.
Another sister, Elizabeth Sheffield (b. 1791) married a William
Robinson (b. 1786) and emigrated to New York with their 6 children.
Another sister, Sarah Sheffield (b. 1793) married a Robert Sutton
(b. 1790). They stayed in Yorkshire, but their children emigrated
to New York.
To the best of my knowledge, this family was associated
with the parish church of St. Michaels, Old Malton. Any info would
be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to make a trip to Yorkshire
from the US next summer. I'd love to have a firm grasp of where
to start my research.

Just started doing a family tree and it is so addictive and exciting. Become
stuck though with my Great Great Grandfather William Watson born in Skipton
(possibly 1857-1877) and married a Catherine (nee Gilbourne or Goulbourn).
They had a son William Arnold Watson (born about 1896). They all went to live
in Shanghai and when the war was over William Arnold Watson returned to Skipton
to visit and met and married Frances Tilley in about 1919 who had brothers
and sisters, Edward, George, Elsie and Colin. Perhaps some of these names and
details rings a bell with someone? Somewhere along the line there is a Lucy
Watson (opera singer) who went to live in Australia.

I'm trying to trace the ancestors of my great great grandfather Robert Waudby,
who emigrated to the U.S. in 1843. He was born 1 Nov 1815 in Scarborough. I
believe his father also was named Robert, who was a merchant seaman and ship
captain. Per old family notes, Robert's mother was Mary A. Fowler, and he had
a brother named Thomas. Robert married Orrey Norton in Illinois in 1844 and
they later lived in Dubuque, Butler and Sioux counties in Iowa before his death
in 1893. Any

My 5th great grandfather William Wells (born in Yorkshire @1742) arrived in
Canada in 1773 with his wife Margaret Dobson (they were married in Thirsk,
N. Yorkshire on Feb 15, 1768) and a couple of children. What happened to

My main interest lies in the Pease family. I have already got quite a bit of
information. I am also interested in the Brotton and Welsh families (Guisborough
area of North Yorkshire) and I have a lot of info regarding my own maiden name
of Poole. All this is in the West Yorkshire area. However, the Pooles seem to
come from Preston and Cumbria (I am as back as 1590). I am very willing to share

My 4 x gt grandfather was born in Urswick,
Lancs in 1797. The son of John Whaley and Elizabeth Shaw. The
record says that John was formerley known as Whalley and his
father was Alexander & Mary
of Burtersett in the township of Hawes. John born 1797, his mother
and 4 of his siblings moved to the north east after John snr
died. Alexander Whaley became a solicitor at Hawes.
Mary, Elizabeth & Ann
never married and ran a boarding school at Coverham, while John
Jnr was an attorney's clerk in Bishop Aukland. I have been to Hawes
Church, which has numerous memorials to the Whaley family, but
have come to a dead end. Does anyone know anything about Alexander
of Burtersett? Any info greatly appreciated.

My grandfather was Ernest William Whitehead, born 1908 in Redcar,
Yorkshire. He was the son of John Henry & Ada (Winter) Whitehead.
Ada was from Redcar and John Henry from Kirkleatham. He was the
son of John Whitehead and Mary Jane Tutty.
John & Ada had 6 children; 1) Elsie Ada born
1899, Redcar - she married George Johnson in 1920 in Middlesbrough.
She went on to run a boarding house in Redcar and had a son who
became a concert pianist. 2) Hilda Mary born 1901, Redcar - she
married Arthur Meadows in 1922 in Middlesbrough. 3) Frances Lilian "Lily" born
1902 in Redcar - she married Sidney Williams in 1923 in Middlesbrough.
They settled in Brambles Farm and had quite a few children, some
of whom were Albert, Mavis and Mearle. Not 100% sure of that last
one. 4) Edith May born 1904 in Redcar - she married Charles Mountain
in 1928 in Middlesbrough. She became a hairdresser. 5) Ernest William
born 1908 in Redcar. Married Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Williams
in 1930 in Middlesbrough. They emigrated to South Africa with their
3 sons, Jack, Lewis and Ernest. 6) Sidney Mellaby born 1910 in
Redcar. Married a lady named "Connie" and
they possibly lived in Sheffield or Leeds.
I recently received a very old photo taken at the
turn of the last century. It was taken at a wedding and is of a
large group of people at a wedding. We believe they are mostly
Whiteheads but there are no names attached. If anyone knows anything
about any of these Whiteheads please contact me. It would be greatly

I've come to a dead end in my genealogy research and I'm wondering
if anyone can help. I'm searching for my father's father,
whom we never talked about because my father was illegitimate.
My father's name was Herbert Whitfield, son of Florence Annie Dooley
(m. Mabbott). He was born in June 1917 in (I think) Grantham. It's
believed by family that dad's father had been a soldier in the
First World War on leave in Mansfield. Grandma and dad lived in
Leeds (where my grandmother may have moved to nearer dad's father)from
1925 on, where they had moved from Mansfield Woodhouse in Notts.
She changed her name from Mabbott to Whitfield at the move. One
reason for the secrecy is that grandma had been married to a William
Mabbott at the time she became pregnant with dad. If anyone can
give me a lead so that I can get on with my ancestry search, I'd
be very grateful.

I am trying to trace some of my distant relatives who
had strong connections with Kildwick, I am trying to find out the
last name of Jacobus Wilcocks' mother. Jacobus or James was christened
in Kildwick Parish church in 1705 and the only information I have
at the moment is that his father was called Henrici and his mother
was Elizabethae and i think they lived at Silsden Moor.
Jacobus also had siblings called Mary born about 1706, John 1703, Henry or
Henricus 1713 who married Anna Briggs at Kildwick in 1733. Can anyone help?

I am in search of my paternal ggrandfather William Henry
Wilks. He was born 6th May 1825 "in the Parish of Sheffield,
in or near the town of Sheffield, in the County of York".
He enlisted on 5th April 1845 in the 13th Regiment of Foot in the
County of Lancaster. On 29th July 1849 he married a Mary Ryan in
Carrickmacross Ireland. He was eventually posted to India where
he lived until he died in 1894. If anyone has any information about
him I would be most grateful as I am completely stuck.

I am trying to trace any ancestors of William Wilson who was born
in Pickhill c1811 and married Louisa Watson in 1844. They lived
in Middleham and had a son, John Wilson [born 6 November 1850]
and a daughter Elizabeth [born c 1848]. Louisa Wilson died c 1862
and I think William remarried in 1866 to an Elizabeth brown who
died c 1866. John Wilson married Isabella Cuthbert on 13 May 1873
and they had 5 chldren, one of whom, John William Wilson was my

My great grandfather Charles Edward
Wilson was born in York City in 1873. At the time of marriage in
1901 he lived at 44, Murray Street, York. He moves to 40 Lower Petergate,
York and then to Upper Poppleton. He married Emily Margaret
Atkin (b. 1877 in York City) in 1901. Charles E. Wilson's father,
a retired Engline Driver, is William Wilson who was born in Middleton

Wones / Woans / Warnes or similar
Am looking for an Edward Wones/woans/warnes or similar born approx 1760 possibly
in North Yorkshire - maybe in the Dales area. He lived for a time in Shropshire
nr Shrewsbury & his son John "Woans" (spelling as per the Parish
Register) was born there in 1804. Edward Wones/Woans/Warnes eventually moved
to South Staffs & died in 1820 as a result of an accident whilst shotblasting
in a limestone quarry nr Sedgley, S.Staffs. His son, also a limestone miner
eventually managed the famous "Wrens Nest" quarry owned by the earl
of Dudley close to Dudley castle in the Black Country. The name, which is very
unusual would appear to crop up in North Yorkshire, in the Dales area & my
interest is that he was one of my gx3 grandfathers. A recent visit to the fabulous
Wensleydale area has kindled my interest. Any info re an Edward Wones, Woans,
Warnes or similar born around 1760 would be most gratefully received.

My grandmother Annie Wood was born in Knaresborough in 1895. Her
fathers' name was William and her mother was Maria [nee Curry].
When I check any Census returns Maria, Annie and the two brothers
Ernest and Bertie are listed but William never seems to be around.
Please can anyone solve this mystery for me?

He married Ivy Woodhead and lived in Halifax. He worked at was
was called Rowntree Macintosh for many years until his retirement.

I would like to find my brother (I believe his name could be Michael
Woodhead). He was adopted when he was a baby, ca. 1945/46/47.
His birth mother and father are Constance Mary (nee Stacey) and
Jack Smith, who live in Australia and South Africa respectively.
His maternal grandparents were Ellen (nee Bray) and Walter Stacey
who were active in their Congregational Church. His paternal
grandparents were Rose [nee Bennett] and Henry Wilmott Smith.
The families had ties to Holmfirth, Huddersfield and Idle (5
Lane Ends) in the early to late 1940s.

I would like to find out if anyone is researching descendants of
Robert Woodhead b1753, married Sarah Ambler 1774, and buried
in 1834 at the Coley Church. One of their children John came
to South Australia in 1839. John's first wife was Ann Flather
and they had 3 sons before Ann died. His second wife was Sibyl
Wharton and 4 more children were born in South Australia. There
are over 1100 descendants of John in Australia. John was born
at Whinney Royd Farm in Tan House Lane, Northowram.

My great grandmother was Henrietta Emma Wordsworth. She was probably
born about 1850 and died in July 1924 in Nussouri in West Bengal,
India. She married police superintendent Albert James Cornelius.
They had at least three children, Joline Ida Wordsworth Cornelius
(born October 1875), Stella Adeline Wordsworth Cornelius (born
November 1872), both born at Fitzabad, Bengal, and Effie Charlotte
Cornelius, my grandmother. The maiden name of the mother continues
as the Christian name of the children one of my names is
Wordsworth. My research has shown that the Wordsworth family
was, and still are, from north-west Sheffield.

Lucy Wren (nee Burns) born to Hannah and Thomas Burns in approx.
1881 and was my Grandmother's half sister or full sister and
she was 13 years older. They also had 13 other siblings including
two sets of twins. They grew up at Bank Farm, Fylingdales, Raw,
Robin Hoods Bay. When Lucy Married George Wren they lived at
a farm overlooking the Loftus Cliffs. I do not know if they had
any family or not. As I am researching my Grandmother's family
I would be grateful for any information at all.

We are researching my wife's family and believe her great grandfather John Wright a coal hawker and later gas worker was killed in a gas explosion in York or area round about the turn of the century. I understand there may have been some kind of gas explosion in May 1902 but have no further details. His death must have occurred after March 1896. Many thanks for any help you can give us.
