Lacy
I am researching the family of 3411 Private A B Lacy of the Koyli, who died
on 29 September 1918, aged 41 years, and who is buried at Kirby Wharfe,
near Tadcaster. Arthur Benjamin Lacy was born in Kirby Wharfe and
was married at Coxwold in August 1905 to Ellen Blakey of Coxwold. Ellen
died in March 1968 at Stockton on Tees. Their eldest child was Francis,
who died in 1989 at Spilsby, Lincs; others include, Joseph, Kathleen, Benjamin,
Arthur and Edith. In the 1950s/60s Edith (married name not known) was living
in the York district. Twins David and Daphne have been mentioned, but I
do not know where they fit into the family. Any information welcomed on
this or any Blakey family from Coxwold, Crayke and Terrington.

I am a Untied States Naval Officer looking for assistance with
tracing my family history in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England.
I am currently stationed in California and therefore need assistance
with obtaining electronic or hard copy records which are maintained
by the Borthwick Institute. Specifically, I am looking for Birth,
Death, Marriage and Bishop/Parish transcript records from St
Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.
I have traveled to Pateley Bridge and unexpectedly found the
headstone of my great-great-great-Grandfather and Grandmother
by the entrance to St Cuthbert church. However, I did not have
time on my travels to visit the Borthwick Institute to search
the detailed church records. Is there any way you could assist
me with this? I will gladly pay for any materials, as well as
your time and effort.
I collected the following information during
my visit to Pateley Bridge in 2005 which should be useful if
you are able to assist me. Headstone in the front of St Cuthbert’s:

to James Leckonby. My great uncle George Leckonby Sayles, who spent most of
his adult life in the Rotherham area, would seem to have some connection with
this family as it was not uncommon to include a family name as one of the names

It was my grandmother's maiden name. My great uncle was born about 1873. Perhaps

Leng
Martin Braithwaite was born Abt. 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb
February 01, 1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire,
England North Newbald, England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann
Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this is a second marriage for
Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of Yorkshire).
Ann and John Leng's son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite
married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married
August 12, 1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick
register, Walkington, England. By banns.
Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means "the
site of the Oak Trees". As
well as being a family name in Yorkshire at one time (very few
people with the name Acomb are still in the Yorkshire area), it
was also the name of a small village to the west of York, England,
but today it is part of the suburbs. Acombs can be traced back
to the 1600's in the village of Long Marston, which is 4 miles
west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph was the most common
name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William and Henry. They
seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of Martin Braithwaite
and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England
(also have Christening June 12, 1797).
More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite:
Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England.
Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark
are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William
Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite
Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial:
Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830,
(Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark,
b. January 03, 1834, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England.
v. Emma Jane Clark, b. April 22, 1835, (Baptized date) at Melton
near Welton, England. vi. Matilda Clark, b. June 04, 1837, (Baptized
date) at Melton near Welton, England. vii. Maria Clark, b. May

Le Resche
Part of
my Le Resche family moved from Halifax to Leeds in the 1820's.
Henry, Sarah, and youngest daughter Elizabeth. Possibly also
other daughters that did not marry. They were Wesleyan.
In the Leeds Directory of 1822 they are living
in Meadow Lane Bridge End, and Henry is a merchant. In Halifax
he used to be a bookkeeper. Their youngest daughter Elizabeth
Le Resche married in St Peters by bond and license to a John
Iving on October 31st 1831.
As it is pre 1837, I am unable to find out whether
her father was still alive at this stage, and Leeds despite having
the details off the IGI have been unable despite the bond in
hand been able to find the entry in the church records. I had
hoped this would show me who gave her away or who her witnesses
were. Or if her father was already dead.
In 1834 the Trade Directory for Leeds, has Sarah
Le Resche at 1 King Street, running a ladies academy. (Her father
in law and brother in law and second son, were all School Masters
in Birmingham.) So Henry must have died by this time.
The 1841 census has her still at this address
as a widow with her daughter Elizabeth living there and a grandson
of 5 plus servants. A search for John Irvine has him boarding
somewhere with marital status crossed through. So perhaps the
marriage had broken down.
In 1837 Elizabeth dies near Halifax, and in 1849 Sarah dies
in Sowerby Halifax at her son's home attended by a daughter Anne
who never married and was a companion to a rich widow for over
30 years. Sarah's son was a tenant of Willow Hall there.
1851 has the grandson back with his father now classed a widower.
I presume they moved back in the mid 1840's as Sarah's health
failed and her youngest daughter sadly died.
I have been able to ascertain that there were
2 King Streets in Leeds. Both still exist? I am presuming her
address was the innermost. The Meadow Lane address, is that close
to the centre of Leeds? I have been unable to find any old maps
of Leeds at that time that might help me see where they lived.
I descend from their second son, also a Henry,
who was actually raised by an Uncle and Aunt in Birmingham. We
know this as contact with the Uncles wife has verified this.
Henry was born in Halifax to Henry and Sarah and christened at
the South Parade Wesletan Chapel there. They had been unable
to find a christening for him at St. Martins Church Birmingham, where
their relative Susannah Hidson had married Samuel Le Resche.
It was also a bond and license marriage as Samuel was not C of
E. They had no children if their own. We cannot locate any in
the church registers. But through contact with descendants of
the Hidson family they have been able verify that he was raised
in Birmingham. And that he grew up there and spoke French in
the family home. It is likely his father Henry (Halifax/Leeds)
also spoke French.
(Henry Senior and Samuel's father was called
Charles He was a French School master and also a SchoolMaster
in other subjects according to Birmingham Trade Directiories
of 1776 to 1780.)
Both boys had been in born in Halifax and christened there in
Halifax at the South Parade Chapel then the family moved to Birmingham
in 1776.
(I know little else anout Charles, not his wife's
name etc. or where he was born as I cannot find him in older
church records in Halifax, so he must have moved there from elsewhere)
Henry Senior then returning to his place of birth Halifax to
and work and marry by bond and licence in 1792. So maybe this
is what Sarah Le Resche taught?
Anyone with details of online old maps etc would
be gratefully received. Or anyone who may know more of what Henry
did as a Merchant.

Littlewood
Help please! I am trying to find any information at all about
my Great Grandmother Mary Ann (Polly) Littlewood. She lived
in the Almshouses at Dewsbury. She had 2 children, my Grandmother,
born about 1910 ish, who I think was christened Fanny, but
changed her name to Geraldine. I know Geraldine had a brother,
but don't even know his name. Geraldine married Ernest Mail,
who I believe came from Huddersfield, he was certainly a proud
Yorkshireman. They had a son Gerald, my father, born c.1927.
He went to Almondbury Grammar School (now King James' School),
and trained as a pharmacist, moving to London. I remember a Great
Uncle Gilbert Yates being mentioned when I was a child, who was
said to be a Don at Cambridge. I have tried really hard to find
information in the birth, marriage and death internet records
and a genealogy site, about all of them but have drawn complete
blanks. I have no documents or accurate dates for any of them
and know so little about them. I would be very grateful indeed
for any information at all.

far as Joshua Littlewood, who married Elizabeth Nussey in 1745
in Thornhill Church, Dewsbury. Any details around or before that
time would be appreciated.

Lofthouse
I am researching the descendents of Christopher (Crispin) Lofthouse and Frances
Young of Stavely, Yorkshire. His son, Charles (b. 1829), emigrated to the US
in 1852. Another son, Thomas, is believed to have emigrated as well and seems
to have gone to Illinois. Dorothy was another child; she appears to have stayed
in England. There was a total of 12 children in the family, 3 of whom died
in infancy. Any information regarding this family would be appreciated.

Lonsdale
I am searching for my Yorkshire ancestor James Lonsdale, a cordwainer. According
to the 1851 census for Darwen, in Lancashire, James stated that he was born
in Haworth, around 1779. His first wife died tragically young, and he then
married a Yorkshire lass named Martha Peel. One of their sons was called Constantine
Lonsdale. After his first wife died James stopped worshipping at the Anglican
church, and his children by Martha Peel were baptised as non-conformists.

Lonsdale
I am searching for other great grandchildren (etc) of Robinson Lonsdale and
his wife, Elizabeth Ann Bailey. Robinson had a house-painting business in Keighley.
He lived from 1840 to 1929. Elizabeth was born in 1848. Their children were
Lydia, 1866, Greenwood, 1869, Charles Henry, 1871, Edgar, 1873, Thomas, 1878,
Maria (my grandmother), 1879, and Mary, 1879. Maria said that her mother died
when she was still a young girl. So perhaps there were other children by Robinson's
second wife, another Elizabeth. I do have a lovely wedding photograph on which
I can name Robinson Lonsdale, Maria and Mary Lonsdale Sharpe (my mother), Lydia
and Ben Crossley, Agnes (Crossley) and Henry Richardson, and the bride and
groom who are Ethel Crossley and Robert Mason. There are 42 other guests. This
was taken in 1920 in Leeds.
