Chapman
I am researching the Chapman family who lived around Kettlewell, Starbotton, Buckden, Hubberholme, Arncliffe, Oughtershaw from 1700. I have a William Chapman and Rebecca who had children in Kettlewell from 1715-1724 but don't know where they came from or how to connect them to the main line. William Chapman and Margery are also in Kettlewell with children born between 1713-1726 which form the main line down to my husband's mother. Does anyone have a connection between these two or a link into Upper Wharfedale from another dale at this time? I suspect they might have come from Dent for the lead mining around Buckden, but they could equally have come from Bishopdale. It is also possible that they were Quakers and attended meetings at Scar House in Hubberholme.

Martin Braithwaite was born Abt. 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb February 01, 1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England North Newbald, England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this is a second marriage for Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of Yorkshire). Ann and John Leng's son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married August 12, 1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick register, Walkington, England. By banns.

Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means "the site of the Oak Trees". As well as being a family name in Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs. Acombs can be traced back to the 1600's in the village of Long Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England (also have Christening June 12, 1797).

More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite: Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England .

Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial: Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830, (Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark, b. January 03, 1834, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. v. Emma Jane Clark, b. April 22, 1835, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vi. Matilda Clark, b. June 04, 1837, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vii. Maria Clark, b. May 26, 1838, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England.

Trying to find the parents and any siblings of Thomas Richard Coates, born about 1855 in Huntington (according to the censuses). In 1861 he was living with a Thomas Smithson, joiner, and wife Jane in Huntington -- he is listed as nephew. All further census information shows him living with the Smithsons as nephew or later apprentice, until he sets up his own household in Huntington, married to Mary Ellen Dixon, also of Huntington. On the marriage certificate he lists his father as Joseph Coates, stonemason, but I am unable to find any records of Joseph Coates except one stonemason by that name born in Falsgrave about 1823, who appears in the 1851 census still living in Falsgrave. Can anyone help me determine whether this is the right Joseph Coates? And what happened to Thomas Richard Coates's parents? I also cannot find a birth record for Thomas to confirm he was born in Huntington.

Coulson
My late grandfather, Robert William Strathearn de Chilton Coulson, was born in the Whitby-Robin Hood's Bay area of Yorkshire in the 1880's or thereabouts. I remember his telling me that, as a boy, he sang in a choir which processed up the Whitby steps on holy days to sing at St. Mary's (Hilda's) abbey. His two sisters were Helena and Mary Coulson. Helena (Len) married a man named Robson. Grandad ran away to sea as a teenager and, after meeting my grandmother in Galveston, Texas, lived the rest of his life in the United States. His sisters lived out their lives in England. Grandad's father was a sea-captain and I think had other ships as well. I would so like to find out about my great-grandparents (both of whom died young) and other ancestors. Could anyone be so kind as to let me know any information with regard to my family? Thank you very much.
