was born between 1822 and 1824. Mary Ann was born 1819 in Holme

His father was William Metcalf. I do not know his mothers name
but we are guessing it was Jane because their first born daughter
was named Jane. Charles and Mary Ann and their daughter Jane
sailed out of Liverpool and landed in New York in 1850. They
moved on and settled in Wisconsin where she had relatives. I
can not find any records with the name of Charles's place of

Braithwaite
Martin Braithwaite was born Abt. 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb February 01,
1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England North Newbald,
England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this
is a second marriage for Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of
Yorkshire). Ann and John Leng's son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite
married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married August 12,
1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick register, Walkington, England.
By banns.
Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means "the
site of the Oak Trees". As well as being a family name in
Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are
still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village
to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs.
Acombs can be traced back to the 1600's in the village of Long
Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph
was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William
and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of
Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England
(also have Christening June 12, 1797).
More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite:
Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England.
Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark
are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William
Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite
Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial:
Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830,
(Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark,
b. January 03, 1834, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England.

Brayshaw / Lassey (Lacy) / Stokes / Kaye
I am searching for the family of John William Brayshaw b. abt. 1776 probably
in York. Married 1795 in York, Yorkshire to Mary Sykes Stokes b. 1778. John
William died 4 April 1848 in Yorkshire. They had the following children:
Sarah b. 7 July 1803; Nancy b. 7 April 1806; Elizabeth b. 20 Aug. 1808
married 7 August 1831 in Almondbury, Yorkshire, to Joseph Kaye: Harriet
M. Brayshaw b.15 April 1811 married 25 Dec 1830 in Almondbury to Abraham
Kaye (brother of Joseph); William b. 30 Oct 1813, married 13 August 1838
in Parish Church, Parish of Dewsbury, York County to Julia Lacy (daughter
of Squire Lassey and wife Hannah Greenwood); James b. 9 April 1819 m. Jane
Melville.
We believe that Sargent John William Brayshaw fought in the 51st Foot Regiment
in the Battle of Waterloo but cannot find proof. Census return for 1841 for
Linthwaite: "John Brayshaw, 65, clothier,
Mary Brayshaw, wife, 60, Charlotte, 15".
The Lassey (Lacy) family lived in Boothroyd, a
section of Dewsbury. Squire Lassey, age 50 and Hannah (Greenwood)
Lassey, age 55, were the parents of Julia Lassey married to William
Brayshaw. Edward, age 15, and Joseph, age 13 were their sons and
brothers to Julia. Joseph, age 6 and Hannah, age 2, must have been
grandchildren of their son, Thomas. Thomas names a son, Joseph
and daughter, Hannah in his Will signed 19 July 1868. He was spelling
his name Lacy by this time and lived in Boothroyd Lane in Dewsbury
in the County of York.
The Brayshaws, William and wife Julia Lacy Brayshaw
emigrated to America and arrived in January 1841. It appears that
this was about the same time that Elizabeth Brayshaw Kaye and husband,
Joseph Kaye as well as Harriet Brayshaw Kaye and husband Abraham
Kaye emigrated to America. They settled initially in the Baltimore
area.

Broadhead
I am researching my father's family, the Broadheads who lived in Barnsley.
My grandfather was called Edward, he was born in 1896. He was sent to live
in Canada at the age of 14 - with his mother's brother & family. Edward's
mother was born Caroline Agnes Taylor in 1871, & his father Alfred
William Broadhead in 1868. They married in 1892. Caroline had 8 siblings:George
(1867), Arthur (1869), Amy (1875), Percy (1877), Frederick (1879), Harold (1881),
Harry (1883) & Florina (1884). Amy went to New Zealand in the early part
of the 20th century, Caroline & Alfred going with them. Alfred died there
a few years later. Edward had a brother called Harry. My grandfather lived
with Frederick Taylor in Winnipeg, Frederick having moved there around the
same time I believe as Caroline & Alfred taking the family to NZ. Caroline's
parents were Caroline Witpen & George Taylor. Caroline Taylor's father
accidentally drowned in the 1890's which appears to be suicide. Alfred's parents
were Hannah Rogers & Samuel Broadhead - they were schoolmasters
in the Barnsley area at West Bretton School. Alfred had 4 siblings: Gertrude
(1871), Florence (1872), Harry (1881) & Muriel (1882). Samuel's parents
were Joshua Broadhead & Mary Goddard. Samuel had the following siblings:
John (1841), David (1843), Sarah (1844), Joshua (1848), Mary (1850), Ann (1851),
Lydia (1853), Leila (1855) & Clara (1859) All born is Austonley. I have
marriages so far for (besides Samuel!) John & David. Joshua's father was
a John Broadhead - I think I may have located his mother, she was called Lydia
Butterworth! From the info I was directed to, I can trace the family back to
around 1600. I wondered if anyone might have any info on the Broadhead or Taylor
families........any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information about my father's aunt who kept a furrier's shop
in Knaresborough around the turn of the century. Outside the shop she displayed
the Prince of Wales crest, so she must have sold furs to the prince before

parish church in Knaresborough (not the church with the spire, but the one
with the tower).

My wife's Great Grandfather was Harold Brown of Hull, Yorkshire. He was born circa 1893, and married Jenny Hawkesly circa 1913. He joined the 6th Bn East Yorkshire Regt, and was Killed in action at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, on the 9th August 1915. He has no known grave, as a scrub fire incinerated him and his comrades after they became casualties of the Turks. If any relatives of this man are still resident in Yorkshire we would love to hear from you. Harold's son (my wife's Grandfather) was born six weeks after his death. and as his Mother remarried she never spoke of his father.

born to Hannah (nee White) and Richard Smales, of Walton, near

three generations of the Halliwell family were Halifax butchers.
In the 1930s Horace was in business at 42 Market and Herbert

My maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Anne Robinson (nee Burns), was
the neice of Robert Burns, schoolmaster at Great Fryup. The 1881
census has him and his family living at the school cottage and
he was still there for the 1901 census. He, like my grandmother
was born in Manchester, but they seem to have had family connections
in Whitby and York. My aunt Phyllis, as a teenager, visited them
and a cousin Gertrude who lived at a 'farm at Robin Hoods Bay
sometime around 1920. There was an Elsie Burns at this time who
lived in Whitby. The family links seem to be Manchester, Salford,
York and Whitby. All my immediate Robinson family connections
are now dead.
