Waddington
My great-great-grandfather was Joshua Waddington, born 1809 and died 1893. He came from Hainworth, a tiny hamlet above Keighley though in the more distant Bingley parish then. I am trying to confirm that his parents were William Waddington born 1771 and Sarah Moore (info passed onto me) but am finding it tricky to source using parish records. I believe they were Wesleyan or Baptist so they may have been baptised/worshipped outside the main Keighley churches.

Waddy
I am trying to find the ancestors of Richard Waddy, 1734-1813, who is buried at Nunmonkton, Yorkshire, and was for 40 years master of the charity school there. His wife, Jane’s, dates are 1740-1826. I know quite a lot about Richard Waddy’s descendants, of whom I am one, but nothing about his antecedents, and it would help solve a family mystery if I could find out who his father was, and where he was born? I have now lived in Yorkshire for 2 years, but haven’t come across any Waddys so far! Anybody out there?

Wagener
Could anyone help me with any information about my grandparents who lived in Keighly from about 1900-1940. My grandad was a dentist, John Harman Wagener, and Grandma, Marian Louisa, was a dental mechanic. She died in the mid 1940s. They lived in a grand house called ‘Aire View’ where he also practiced his dentistry. This house was bought by the headmaster of Bingley Grammer school at the time. They had six children: Otto, Raven, Roland, Noel (my father), Enid and Mona, who have all now passed on. There are stories in our family about Danish origins and we really don’t know where the name Wagener comes from. Grandad studied in America at Yale and/or Harvard. He was also a Diamond Sculls in the Henley regatta.
If anyone knows anymore about them or the old house I would dearly appreciate if you could let me know.

I am seeking information on Richard and Matthew Walker. They both boarded the immigrant ship ‘Thomas & William’, leaving the port of Scarborough in April 1774 bound for Nova Scotia. Richard and Matthew both list their occupations as Farmers and as both coming from Yorkshire; it’s a possibility they are brothers or are related. Richard lists his age as 33 (born abt 1741); Matthew is 24 (born abt 1750). Richard notes his reason for immigrating as “Going to seek for better employ” and Matthew notes his reason as “All the small farms taken into large ones in his Parish, could not get Bread”. I have hit a Nova Scotia brick wall with my oldest paternal grandfather, Matthew Walker, who was born about 1762 (birthplace unknown). I was born and bred at Todmoden but in the late C19 the family were living in Sowerby Bridge. My g.g.g.f. John Waller was married at Halifax P. Ch but he had been born at Giggleswick in 1806. His grandfather Joshua Waller was said to be of Clapham when he married at Horton in Ribblesdale in 1750. He should have been baptised C1718 but I have been unable to find the evidence in parish registers.

Waller
Charles Waller was born in Long Riston, East Yorkshire about 1860 according to census but I can find no trace of him in the parish records of that time or in the GRO. He married Eliza Wilson of Hutton Cranswick in 1889 when he claimed to live in Middleton. His father is recorded as being William Waller, an agricultural labourer. Charles was also a farm servant. Has anyone else studied the Wallers of East Yorkshire? Charles and Eliza’s son, George William, was my husband’s grandfather.

Ward
So far I have traced my Ward family name back to Robert Ward, born 1600 in Rothwell, near Leeds. The Wards stayed in Rothwell for near on 200 years before my particular branch moved to Sheffield.
Robert Ward (born about 1600) married Helen/a Ellis in 1625. They had six children starting with Elizabeth in 1627 and ending with Richard in about 1646. Richard had two wives; the name of the first is unknown but the second was Ann Morninton, and between them fathered nine children. The youngest, John, was born in 1704, and married Esther Gibson in 1727. They had six children, including Thomas Ward, born 1735. He married Mary Thompson in 1757 and they had eleven children before she died following childbirth in 1777. The second-youngest, Thomas (born 1774) married Hannah Lamb/e in 1796. They had seven children, including William Ward (born 1799). At this point, the family is still living in Rothwell.
The list goes on…. William and Hannah had five children. Second-youngest was James Samuel Ward (born 1828). He and his brother Joshua married two sisters Jane and Elizabeth Gelder (respectively). James and Jane had two children, Frederick Ward and Ellen Gelder Ward (born 1852). Ellen Gelder Ward is my great-great-grandmother, and her illegitimate son Alfred William Ward is my great-grandfather.
I’m interested in hearing from anyone who can link themselves to this long line. Truth be told, I’ve reached a dead end with Robert Ward on the parish records and am keen to see if I can get any further back! To my knowledge, there were two Ward families in Rothwell circa 1600-1750 (I have traced the other family as well but so far found no connection between the two). I have information on all sibling’s marriages and families, and as a result have even found some interconnecting third-cousin marriages! Even if you’re not sure about being related, please get in touch as I have a lot of information to check against. Thanks.

Help is requested on the subject of William Ward, wife Elizabeth and son Moses. I am interested in family details concerning their life before their immigration to Nova Scotia, Canada aboard the Two Friends, March 7, 1774, sailing from the port of Hull, UK.
Before their immigration, the family is believed to have been tenant farmers in the Yorkshire area. Documents suggest that due to rent increases by their landlord, presumably because of farmland enclosure practices, the family accepted the risks of removing themselves to Nova Scotia. As the family were presumably farmers, I believe records of lease holdings from period manors, taxation records, etc. are key to this search. Other suggestions of documents and their sources are acceptable reasons to reply to this request.
This immigration movement locally referred to in Nova Scotia as Lt. Governor Michael Franklin of Nova Scotia initiated ?The Yorkshire Immigration?.

I am looking for information on the Sheffield family from the Huttons Ambo/Malton area. William Sheffield (b. 1762) married Sophia Ward (b. 1762). They had several children. My ancestor is their son, Thomas B Sheffield (b. 1797). He emigrated to the US (first Kentucky, later New York) about 1819. His oldest brother was William Sheffield (b. 1787). He stayed in Yorkshire and was a surgeon. He eventually moved to Farmanby. Thomas had a sister, Sophia Sheffield (b. 1799), who also emigrated to New York. She never married and became a naturalized US citizen (fairly rare for a woman at that time). Her occupation on a US census is listed as “lady”. Another brother (? unsure of their relationship), Richard H Sheffield (b. 1789), came to New York around 1819. Another sister, Elizabeth Sheffield (b. 1791) married a William Robinson (b. 1786) and emigrated to New York with their 6 children. Another sister, Sarah Sheffield (b. 1793) married a Robert Sutton (b. 1790). They stayed in Yorkshire, but their children emigrated to New York.

To the best of my knowledge, this family was associated with the parish church of St. Michaels, Old Malton. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping to make a trip to Yorkshire from the US next summer. I’d love to have a firm grasp of where to start my research.

Just started doing a family tree and it is so addictive and exciting. Become stuck though with my Great Great Grandfather William Watson born in Skipton (possibly 1857-1877) and married a Catherine (nee Gilbourne or Goulbourn). They had a son William Arnold Watson (born about 1896). They all went to live in Shanghai and when the war was over William Arnold Watson returned to Skipton to visit and met and married Frances Tilley in about 1919 who had brothers and sisters, Edward, George, Elsie and Colin. Perhaps some of these names and details rings a bell with someone? Somewhere along the line there is a Lucy Watson (opera singer) who went to live in Australia.

By 1916 they were living in Woolley, Barnsley where their son, William (my father) was born. I’m not sure when but they moved to Hartlepool, where they both died, Ada in 1934 and Frederick in 1938. Their children were: Emma born around 1831, William born around 1833, Isaac born around 1834, Jane born around 1838, Henry born around 1840.
After Jane’s death, William is then connected with Mary (?); I am not sure if there was a marriage. Their children included: Barbara born around 1846, Charlotte born around 1848, Martha born around 1850, James Hanson Watts 1852-1890.
* Is anyone able to confirm that Jane was indeed a Popplewell?

Webb
I am trying to trace a war record (WW1) for my grandfather William Thomas Webb born in Skipton in 1895. I have hit a blank on every avenue I have tried. In 1901 he lived at 3 Backwater Street and in 1911 he lived at 13 Neville Street. He could possibly have joined the army from that address. He was a ‘reacher in’ on that census at I assume a cotton mill. I do not know if he was invalided out – all I am aware of he suffered wounds on his leg due to mustard gas. After the war he must have returned to Skipton as he married my gran, Kate Cookson, in 1925 at Skipton. My gran was in service somewhere in Skipton but I do not know where (but she told me the place was haunted!). They later moved to the Doncaster/Scunthorpe area where my granddad was a farmer and I lived with them from 1950s onwards.

Do you know of any family called Whaites or Waite living in Ringland, Norfolk and moving to Langcliffe, West Yorkshire anytime after 1871. Would love to hear from any family members still living in Norfolk or in Yorkshire.

I am looking for information on my grandmother, Ellen Whitehead. She was born in 1895 in Mexborough, Yorkshire. Her father’s name was John Whitehead and I have little else to go on. I know that Ellen had at least one brother and one sister but I am not sure of their names. The brother might have been named Tom Whitehead and he lived in Doncaster and the sister might have married a Milligan and continued to live in Mexborough. Ellen Whitehead married James Hindby and together they had three children, Jack, Bill and Joyce. Ellen died in childbirth at the age of 30 years. Joyce is my mother and she is now 87 years old. The family members who raised her gave her very little information about her mother including when Ellen was born. There was no contact with the Whitehead family either. My mother would love to know her mother’s month and day of birth. I have tried searching various genealogy sites but have only been able to find out the year of birth, 1895, from these and the 1911 census. There doesn’t seem to be any birth records or baptismal records for an Ellen Whitehead who was born in 1895 in Mexborough. I live so far away in Canada and I can’t go to the churches in Mexborough and see if they have any records on the Whitehead family. Can anyone help?

I am researching my family tree and am looking for further information on my great-great-great-grandfather Philip Albert Whitehead.  I know he was born in 1865 Apperley Bridge, Yorkshire. He had a brother, Herbert, born about 1865 Haverill, Essex and it also appears another brother born about 1876 Ipswich, Suffolk. I know Philip’s parents were David and Jane Mary Whitehead, I’m sure these are the parents of the other 2 boys as well but I can’t seem to find any marriage records for them and I don’t know Jane’s maiden name.  Philip and Herbert were apprentice ropemakers for James Henderson and they also appear to be living with James and his wife Mary A in the 1881 census records. This record also shows that James and Mary have adopted in Ernest. If anybody has any information on these Whitehead’s or knows what happened to David and Jane I would greatly appreciate it.

Whitehead
My grandfather was Ernest William Whitehead, born 1908 in Redcar, Yorkshire. He was the son of John Henry & Ada (Winter) Whitehead. Ada was from Redcar and John Henry from Kirkleatham. He was the son of John Whitehead and Mary Jane Tutty.

John & Ada had 6 children; 1) Elsie Ada born 1899, Redcar – she married George Johnson in 1920 in Middlesbrough. She went on to run a boarding house in Redcar and had a son who became a concert pianist. 2) Hilda Mary born 1901, Redcar – she married Arthur Meadows in 1922 in Middlesbrough. 3) Frances Lilian “Lily” born 1902 in Redcar – she married Sidney Williams in 1923 in Middlesbrough. They settled in Brambles Farm and had quite a few children, some of whom were Albert, Mavis and Mearle. Not 100% sure of that last one. 4) Edith May born 1904 in Redcar – she married Charles Mountain in 1928 in Middlesbrough. She became a hairdresser. 5) Ernest William born 1908 in Redcar. Married Mary Elizabeth “Molly” Williams in 1930 in Middlesbrough. They emigrated to South Africa with their 3 sons, Jack, Lewis and Ernest. 6) Sidney Mellaby born 1910 in Redcar. Married a lady named “Connie” and they possibly lived in Sheffield or Leeds.

I recently received a very old photo taken at the turn of the last century. It was taken at a wedding and is of a large group of people at a wedding. We believe they are mostly Whiteheads but there are no names attached. If anyone knows anything about any of these Whiteheads please contact me. It would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information about Benjamin Whiteley and his wife Hannah (unknown maiden name.)  He was born in Longwood, Huddersfield in about 1794. They had six children: John (born 1816), David (born 1825), Charlotte (born 1826), Frances (born 1832), Benjamin (born 1839) and Elizabeth (born 1840.)  I am looking for any information on Benjamin’s parents and Hannah’s maiden name.

David married Rebecca Wood (born 1822 in Armley to George Wood and Elizabeth Teal) in 1848 in Leeds. They had seven children: Eliza (born 1849), Mary (born 1850), Isreal (born 1851 died 1873), Emma (born 1852), Charles (born 1853 died 1914), George (born 1855 died 1888) and Annie (born 1857 died 1911).  All children were born in Wortley except Annie who was born in Guiseley.  I believe David and Rebecca both died in Guiseley.  Charles, George and Annie all immigrated to the United States where they settled in Massachusetts. The three generations I do have information on – Benjamin, David, and George – have their occupation noted as spinners in the textile industry. I would love any information on the sisters Eliza, Mary and Emma. I believe they remained in England. I am also in need of information on Rebecca Wood’s family.

Whitfield
I’ve come to a dead end in my genealogy research and I’m wondering if anyone can help. I’m searching for my father’s father, whom we never talked about because my father was illegitimate. My father’s name was Herbert Whitfield, son of Florence Annie Dooley (m. Mabbott). He was born in June 1917 in (I think) Grantham. It’s believed by family that dad’s father had been a soldier in the First World War on leave in Mansfield. Grandma and dad lived in Leeds (where my grandmother may have moved to nearer dad’s father)from 1925 on, where they had moved from Mansfield Woodhouse in Notts. She changed her name from Mabbott to Whitfield at the move. One reason for the secrecy is that grandma had been married to a William Mabbott at the time she became pregnant with dad. If anyone can give me a lead so that I can get on with my ancestry search, I’d be very grateful.

Willis/Wallace/Nelson
My great-grandmother, Mary Ann Willis, was from Barnard castle, born about 1875. My research shows her as Mary Ann Willis, Mary Ann wallace, and possibly Mary Ann Nelson. This is confusing to say the least. She married William Robert Snarey and last lived in Shildon, co. Durham. To confound things further all her children were given the middle name Snarey, but the last name Travers. If anyone can help me sort this out I would greatly appreciate it.

Wilson
I am researching the Wilson family from Ingleton, North Yorkshire. I have come to a complete stop with William Wilson dob 1863? born Ingleton. The census dated 1902 shows him living with wife, Agnes (née Tyson) at Crinabottom, a farm house at the foot of Ingleborough. No records appear for him before that date, and I am lead to believe that he was born and brought up in Ingleton. Does anyone have any history, story, or records with William Wilson, his parents, or his wife Agnes that could help? I would be most grateful.

Wilson
I am trying to trace any surviving relatives of Sam (Jock) Wilson, service number 2764432, who served with the Black Watch and Number 6 Commando and who sadly fell in battle on 10.06.1944.
I believe that his parents were T. Henry Wilson and Annie Wilson and that they lived in Morley, Yorkshire at the time of Sam’s death.
Any help or advice about where to turn would be very much gratefully received.

I am tracing my family back and have got as far as 1702. But I am going by my great-great-Auntie Nora’s research notes. She did very well but I need more information on Timothy Wilson of Hartwith near Harrogate. He had three sons and a daughter: Timothy jnr, James, Patience and John. Timothy jnr married a Judith Jackson in 1749.
Also I’m looking for information on John and Elizabeth Wilson, married Jan 6th 1760, they had eight children and so far my tree only follows the youngest of these children. I am looking on any info on a William Wilson (DOB: 14.11.1761) and Thomas Wilsom (DOB: may or june of 1779), I’d like to see where these lines went.
The Wilson family I am tracing is currently residing in York.

I am trying to find a publication which may contain a photograph of my grandfather, Charles Wilson, who lived in Bridlington. Sadly he died aged 38 in 1938 when my father was 2 years old. We have never seen a photograph of him but believe he had connections with the town’s cricket club. He worked as a civil servant up to the time of his death. He was born in Hull and moved to Bridlington as an adult.

I am looking for information about Thomas and Agnes Wilson, members of the Society of Friends, who lived in Askrigg in the late 1600s and then emigrated to North America. If anyone knows something about the Quakers in Askrigg during this time period, or the Wilson family from the late 1600s, I would appreciate any information on them and their family.
Thank you so much for your assistance.

Wiseman
I’m looking for information on a Michael Wiseman born 1/7/1694 in Ravensworth. (I know some details about his father Edward & his two wives, Mary [Atkinson] being his mother, and his siblings, Isobell [born in 1696], Ann [born in 1700], Christopher [born in 1704]….Don’t know the detail of daughter dying on 30/9/1711 or anything of the history or whereabouts of the family after 1711 (last mention of them in Ravensworth). There is a Mich(yeo), presumed Michael, in the Startforth area who had four chldren between 1726-1737 there (I now all family line after that) but I don’t know anything about Mich. Could he have been the Michael born in 1694? There is also a Michael who witnesses an apprenticeship of William & John Redhead from Startforth to Joseph Appleby (weaver) of Barnard Castle in 1735/36. There is also mention of a Michael in Preston Richard (Heversham) petitioning for arrears of relief for 3 children at Carlisle Q.S in 1729 (no link with Startforth known at present). Could the first three Michaels be one and the same, plus even the fourth as there are very few Michaels about in N.Yks, Sth Durham, Cumbria area,at this time? Any help would be very much appreciated.
