I am looking for Thomas A Sanderson who was the son of Arnold Sanderson born 1911 and lived in Long Lee, Keighley, West Yorkshire. Thomas was born in 1940, his mothers name was Gladys, born 1909, maiden name Ruddlesden. They left from Liverpool on the Cunard ship Franconia in 1953 bound for Quebec, Canada, but records seem to show they returned back to Yorkshire only a few months later. Arnold worked in the textile industry in the 1940s as a Piece Examiner but I think he was a Fish Fryer whilst in Canada as that was noted as his occupation on the returning passenger list.
I believe they returned to the Bradford area. I would be most grateful for anyone with any information regarding Arnold’s death and the current whereabouts of surviving relatives, particularly Thomas.

I am looking to find out about my mother and grandmother’s family. All I know is that my mother and grandmother moved to Canada from Sheffield, Yorkshire, England and I believe that the town they lived in was called Rivlan Valley.
My grandmother’s maiden name was Gladys Anne Sanderson, she married a ‘Gill\’ (last name) first name Robert I think. They had 2 children, a boy and a girl.
My mom’s maiden name would be Gladys Anne Gill and her brother, my uncle’s, name was Frederick Gill. Not sure if there was a middle name. Both are gone and mom didn’t talk about relatives or anything but I know they’re there. I would love to find out about the family if anyone could help.

My grandmother, Hannah Sanderson, was born at Canal Head Pocklington in 1891. She was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Pooley. Hannah worked as a domestic servant until she became pregnant. Turned away by her family she entered the workhouse at Pocklington called the Poplars.
On 4th February 1911 she gave birth to a son in the workhouse.
She stayed there for some months until she went back into domestic service and her son was boarded out. In 1914 she became pregnant again and went to her stepfather George Cook at Melbourne near Pocklington for help. He was a cruel man and would not take her and her son in.
She turned to the church and was sent to Scarborough workhouse. Her son was taken to Barnados home at Hull. Hannah gave birth to a daughter in August 1914 in the scarborough workhouse.
Her son was sent by barnados to Essex to a boys home.
Hannah went to work and her baby daughter was boarded out to a house in Scarborough.
Later that year her baby daughter died and her son was brought back to her.
She continued work in domestic service and her son was boarded out to a Mrs Moore at Castle Street Scarborough. Four years later she arrived in Mexborough, but how she got here is a mystery.
I would like to know where she worked in Scarborough and how she came to live in Mexborough.

He was married in All Saints, Wakefield, Yorkshire, in 1777 to Hannah Haigh (born 1745) and died in Alverthorpe in 1831. I would like to know why he moved from Scotland. Did the woollen industry fail in Scotland or was it because of his religion? He was most likely to have been a Presbyterian if not a Scottish Covenanter as Scotts are mentioned in the Covenant. Alverthorpe was a woollen area and also a strong Presbyterian area. Does anyone know more about the history of this time?

I am seeking information regarding any descendants or family of Thomas Sedgwick or of his father, Samuel.
Thomas was born in Yorkshire, possibly in Leeds, in about 1891. He was a painter and decorator, and was a ‘journeyman’. I believe he served as a Colour Sargeant in WW1.
I believe he then spent some years in Canada, but returned to Yorkshire, and at one stage lived at Swinnow Crescent, Pudsey.
He had at least one son called Jack, and maybe another who may have been killed in action in WW2.
Thomas died at St James’ Hospital, Leeds in August 1940.
His father was Samuel Sedgwick who, I believe, was a stonemason, also a ‘journeyman’, married to Annie Sedgwick.
I would appreciate any photographs of Thomas.

I am looking for information on Samuel Selby born about 1795 Bradford, Yorkshire. He died 19 May 1868 at Boston Spa, Yorkshire?
He married Sarah Walker (1793-1838) on 17 Jan 1821 at Bradford. Their children were Sarah Jane Selby (1822-1829), William Walker Selby (1826-1857), Samuel Selby (1828-1828), Lydia Selby (1830-?), Catherine Janet Selby (1830-?), John Selby (1830-?) and Esther Anne Selby (1836-?).
Samuel Selby’s parents I think were John Selby (died 5 Jun 1803) and Sally Sugden (born 1774 Bradford).
I am descendant of William Walker Selby who migrated to Australia and married Margaret Lynch on 19 Feb 1849 in Sydney. He died of injuries caused by a kick from a horse in Ipswich in Queensland.
I would appreciate if anyone has any more information on this family.

I am looking for the deaths of Joseph Sharp/Sharpe (b. Leeds abt 1835) and his wife Sarah Burdon Sharp/Sharpe (b. Hutton Rudby abt 1837; dau of Simeon Burdon and 2nd wife Sarah Ward, married 1824). Joseph and Sarah were married in 1858 in Hartlepool. They had 12 children, 9 of whom lived to travel with the family to Australia in 1883 then on to the Hawaiian Islands in the 1890s; some returned to Yorkshire, one returned to Australia, some stayed in the Hawaiian Islands, and some went on to California and Arkansas in the US. Joseph and Sarah were in the Hawaiian Islands until about 1902 or 1903, when they “went home to Leeds”. We believe they were still in the Leeds area at the turn of the year 1909-1910, but have lost them after that. We think a brother of Sarah Burdon Sharp/Sharpe was in Huddersfield about 1904 but haven’t yet traced that line. We think his name was C. S. Burdon. Children of Joseph and Sarah were Sarah, Alice E., Grace Margaret, Lilian Josephine, Augustus Peabody, Cecil E.B., Robert William, Florence B., and Joseph Harold. Grace and Lily returned to Yorkshire; we have their information, as well as the other children. Looking mainly for the deaths of the parents Joseph and Sarah Burdon Sharp/Sharpe.

I am hoping someone can help me solve a West Yorkshire mystery. My Mother, Mary Shaw (1923-1996), according to her birth certificate, was born in Huddersfield, the daughter of Wallace Wilson Shaw and Florence Heppenstall. Florence (1882-1923) was the daughter of Beaumont Heppenstall and Mary Jane Hellawell.
However, apart from his name on my mother’s birth certificate, and his own death certificate (Huddersfield in 1942), I cannot find any trace of Wallace Wilson Shaw in any records at all. Family rumour has it that he was born in Scotland and brought to Huddersfield as a small child, but where in Scotland we don’t know. The Scottish Census is no help because of that.
The only sure marriage record I can find for Florence Heppenstall is when she married her first husband, Arthur Marsden Shaw, in June 1902; the name of her father bears this out. And there again, I cannot find a death record for Arthur. I am almost suspecting that Arthur Marsden Shaw and Wallace Wilson Shaw might be one and the same man, but I cannot be 100% certain. I did find a baptismal record for an Arthur Shaw (no ‘Marsden’), son of Thomas and Elizabeth Shaw in Rashcliffe in 1880, but I cannot be certain on that either, with there being no ‘Marsden’ in his given name.
Florence and Arthur Marsden Shaw had three children:
Frank Marsden Shaw 1904 – ?
Jack Marsden Shaw 1906 – 1921
Lilian Marsden Shaw 1906 – 1948
Records show that Florence apparently had five children with Wallace Wilson Shaw (three of whom * died in infancy):
Harry Wilson Shaw 1911 – 1980
*Louis W Shaw 1913 – 1913
*Beaumont W Shaw 1914 – 1915
*Phyllis W Shaw 1915 – 1917
Mary Shaw 1923 – 1996 (my Mom)
Florence, sadly died in childbirth when my mother was born in 1923.
Intrigue has us imagining all kinds of possible scenarios. There is a gap between the birth of Lilian Marsden Shaw and the birth of Harry Wilson Shaw, but the dates of 1906 – 1911 do not even cover the WWI years, which would have offered a clue as to the demise of Arthur.
It is told that Wallace Wilson Shaw was disabled, and in ‘those days’ disabled folk were treated badly, and not talked about much. He must have led a very sad life, disabled, fathering three babies who died in infancy, and then finally losing his wife at childbirth. Who knows – my mother never spoke much about her father – how her dad may have treated her in consequence?
No one in my immediate family (brothers and sisters) have any ideas about this. My sister has even been to the Huddersfield Records Office, and to the library to search archived newspapers for any mention, but come up blank on Wallace Wilson’s marriage.
If anyone may have the tiniest snippet of information about Arthur Marsden Shaw, Wallace Wilson Shaw, and/or Florence Heppenstall, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I am looking for information on Alfred B. Shaw. He was born in England about 1858 and married Margaret Fay in Boston in 1887.
His parents may be John Shaw (1824-) born in Elland, Yorkshire and Sarah Shaw (1830-) born in Queensbury. Their children were; Hannah (1849-), Jane (1855-), Alfred Bates, and Alice (1862-). In 1871 they were all living in Halifax.
John and Sarah were married at St Marys, Halifax in 1848. John’s father was Ely Shaw, born in Stainland in 1797. Sarah’s father was probably Joseph Priestley of Queensbury.
In 1881 Alfred worked as a clerk and resided at the Queen Hotel in Halifax. He emigrated to Boston, USA between 1881 and 1887.
While John and Sarah are strong possibilities as Alfred’s parents I am unable to positively link them. Any help on this line would be welcome.

I am looking for information on the Sheffield family from the Huttons Ambo/Malton area. William Sheffield (b. 1762) married Sophia Ward (b. 1762). They had several children. My ancestor is their son, Thomas B Sheffield (b. 1797). He emigrated to the US (first Kentucky, later New York) about 1819. His oldest brother was William Sheffield (b. 1787). He stayed in Yorkshire and was a surgeon. He eventually moved to Farmanby. Thomas had a sister, Sophia Sheffield (b. 1799), who also emigrated to New York. She never married and became a naturalized US citizen (fairly rare for a woman at that time). Her occupation on a US census is listed as “lady”. Another brother (? unsure of their relationship), Richard H Sheffield (b. 1789), came to New York around 1819. Another sister, Elizabeth Sheffield (b. 1791) married a William Robinson (b. 1786) and emigrated to New York with their 6 children. Another sister, Sarah Sheffield (b. 1793) married a Robert Sutton (b. 1790). They stayed in Yorkshire, but their children emigrated to New York.
To the best of my knowledge, this family was associated with the parish church of St. Michaels, Old Malton. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping to make a trip to Yorkshire from the US next summer. I’d love to have a firm grasp of where to start my research.

I have two direct line branches of Shepherdson in my family tree. Both are from Yorkshire. I would like to try find out if they are connected.
My great-great-grandparents Timothy Shepherdson, born 1852 in South Australia and Jane Ann Ward born 1848 in Pickering, Yorkshire, married in Victoria, Australia in 1869.
Timothy is a descendant of George Shepherdson, born about 1705, and Mary Wharton born 1707 married in Wintringham in 1738. Their great-grandson; my 3 x great grandfather, (Timothy’s father) Robert Shepherdson was born in Sherburn, Yorkshire (immigrated to Australia). I am not sure where George was born.
Jane is a descendant of William Shepherdson, born 1710 in Farndale, and Sarah Grimshaw, born 1716 in Farndale. Their daughter, Mercy Shepherdson born 1734, married John Ward born 1732. They are Jane’s great-grandparents. I don’t have any other information on William yet.
I would love to hear from anyone connected to either line.

Is there anyone who could give me some information about my great-grandmother Sofia Simpson née Noble?
She was born in Nettleton, Lincolnshire in 1834. She married George Simpson and according to the 1901 census records they lived and farmed at Blue Hall Aldborough, Holderness in the East Riding of Yorkshire. They had 6 children – William, Joseph, Annie, Edith, Hugh and Nora.
Sofia then disappears from the Census records and I am unable to find a death certificate for her.
My grandmother was their daughter, Nora Alberta Simpson, who married Thomas Edwin Varley. My Father was their third son, John Thomas Varley. They lived at The Grange, Winestead where I was born in January 1949.
My father talked to me about a place called Wissembourg, Alsace, I seem to remember that my great-grandmother’s family had originated from there.
I would be grateful for any information about Sofia.

I am still trying to find any information about my husband’s grandfather Frank Skaife. I have located him on the 1911 census but I understand that he disappeared in 1912. The family story goes that Frank and Adelaide (his wife, née Thompson) went to the theatre the night before his disappearance and enjoyed themselves, then the following morning he got up early to go to work, said goodbye to his wife and children…. and was never seen again. At the time, the authorities made detailed searches but no sign of him ever came to light.
I understand that Frank may possibly have married someone his family did not approve of. I believe that he came from a family of wealthy means, and that his family perhaps made arrangements for him to leave his wife and 5 small children, and that they may have made it possible for him to ‘disappear’. In those days it would have been very easy to have done that. There were some ‘sightings’of him in various places for a few weeks, but nothing concrete came of the searches and Frank’s wife struggled to rear her 5 children by taking in washing and working her fingers to the bone, being left to fend for herself was not easy, she managed well though and all her children grew up hale and hearty.
As I am a part of the Skaife family, this mystery of the disappearance of the grandfather of my husband is a source of some puzzlement to the Skaifes. Frank was born about 1880 and he and his wife Adelaide lived in Keighley. I believe he was a delivery man and may have driven either a horse and cart or just possibly a van. We think he delivered laundry.
There is just the remotest chance that he may have had another name besides Frank, possibly a forename, Frank being his middle name…. but he was known as Frank.
Frank’s father was George Skaife and his mother was Sarah Jane (née) Reeday. Frank may also have gone to one of the national schools.
If anyone has any knowledge of him or any consequent family he may have had, I would be most grateful if you would e-mail me. Many thanks indeed.

I would like find out about Frank Skaife who disappeared suddenly, and without ever being found, in 1912. He was my grandfather. He went out to work in the morning and never returned, leaving 5 children under 9 years old – 3 girls and 2 boys. He lived in Keighley, West Yorkshire, possibly around the West Lane area. He can be seen on the 1911 census, but there is no information at all on him after that. I would be grateful if anyone can throw any light on where he went sometime in 1912. It has been a family mystery for many years. He was married to Adelaide neé Thompson, and his eldest child at the time of his disappearance was named George, aged about 9 (my father). Please, if anyone has any information I would love to hear from you, and my curiosity can at last be put to rest!

I am trying to find out where in Canada my grandmother (maiden name Selina Smedley) finally lived; she married my grandfather, Walter Suggitt, at St Nicholas Church in Beverley on the 17 June 1901. She was born in Beverley on the 15 April 1883 and I have been told that after she separated from my grandfather she went to Canada with my uncle, George Suggitt, and a man called Wilson in or around the year 1906. My father, who was two years old at the time, was left in this country to be brought up by his grandmother. If anybody in the UK or Canada could help me solve this mystery I would be very grateful.

I am seeking any information on the Spedding families from Cumberland and Westmoreland. My mother is Bertha Florence Spedding and she had three sisters and two brothers. Their father was Frederick Wilson Spedding, and their mother was Maria Taylor; they all lived in Gargrave, North Yorkshire.
We have traced the family back to Robert Spedding born in Austwick, North Yorkshire, about 1811. One of Robert’s son’s is on the 1851 census with Henry and Sarah who we think are Roberts Siblings. We are having trouble tracing any of these three and would be grateful for any assistance.

I am trying to trace the Spencer family from Hunslet, West Yorkshire.
Walter Henry Spencer born 1908, Hunslet, parents James Spencer and Jane Johnson. On the 1911 census he is living at 51 Carr Moor Side, Hunslet, Leeds, with his parents and a sister Winifred age 1 (this is the first we knew of her so assume she died in infancy).
Walter had 2 younger brothers, William born 1913, Hunslet and James born 1917, and a younger sister called Irene, born 1928, Hunslet. There is also a birth registration for a Maud Spencer in 1914 whose mother’s maiden name was Johnson so a possible sister.
Walter Henry Spencer was supposedly brought up by his Uncle, Isaac Spencer. My dad knows very little of his fathers upbringing. In 1911, Isaac Spencer was living at 24 Lake Terrace, Hunslet, Leeds, with his wife Catherine, no children it seems. How do I find more information out from 1911 to about 1935?
Family in brief:
James Spencer (Walter’s father) born 1888, Hunslet, parents William Spencer and Elizabeth unknown. 4 brothers: Walter born 1878, William born 1879, Arthur born 1881, Isaac born 1884 (possible 5th brother Albert), and 2 sisters Cecelia born 1892, & Lucy born 1895.
William Spencer born 1855, Methley Yorkshire to Thomas Spencer born 1817, Holfenton, Dorset? and Esther Watson born 1823, Ledstone, Yorkshire. 2 brothers John born 1840, James born 1844, and 5 sisters MaryAnn born 1846, Martha born 1848, Hannah born 1851, Lydia born 1856 and Susannah born 1859.
Thomas Spencer’s father is listed as John Spencer, a waterman on his marriage certificate.
My second query is can anyone help me work out who this John Spencer is, when he was born etc? Thomas Spencer appears to have been born in Dorset, Holfenton, which doesn’t appear to exist anymore, but according to his marriage banns, it says that both him and Esther are of the parish which was Yorkshire so a contradiction (1851 census gives the Dorset information, by 1861 he seems to have died so there is a mistake somewhere and I don’t know how to prove it!).
Many thanks for any help.

Stables and Barker
I am looking for information on this family. John Barker married Mary Stables in about 1825; they were both born about 1804-1806. Their children were Ann, born 1826; William born 1827; twins Benjamin and Johnathan born 1836; and twins Jane and Sarah born 1839. In the 1841 census the family was living in Bramley (civil parish), Leeds Borough, Yorkshire in the subregistration district of Kirkstall on Killingsbeck’s Yard. John Barker’s profession was in clothery. It says they were all born in Yorkshire. I found a John Barker christened in Dobcross, Yorkshire on 12 Aug 1804 with parents William Barker and Ann. I don’t know how to prove or disprove if this is my John Barker or not. I have found all of the chilren’s birth dates on the LDS website. One of the twin daughter’s, Sarah, was born in Horsforth on 6 Aug 1838.
The entire family emigrated to the US and John Barker and Mary Stables are found in Akron, Ohio in the 1850 census. Daughter Ann has married Daniel Priest and is living in Wisconsin. The other children are either living in Akron or with Ann Barker Priest.
Is anyone researching this family in England? Does anyone have any hints as to where I might search next? I have more information after they came to the US but am looking for additional information in England. Although, I am still looking for the death date of John Barker, the father, and for his parents and the parents of Mary Stables.

I am seeking information on my family history. My grandfather’s name was Percy, he was killed early in World War Two on HMS Wren; he lived on Beverly Road, Hull. His father, I am told, was in the Sally Ann and was a traveling bare knuckle fighter to raise funds for the church; a lost art I’m sure is a relief to the church. Any information on these men, and a family tree on them would be wonderful, thank you for your time.

I am looking for burial place for two generations of surgeons based around Yorkshire:
Erasmus Stone baptised 1788 Winster, Derbyshire and mostly lived around West Hall, Wentworth.
This Erasmus died in 1876 in Rotherham. His wife Anne/a née Goodwin lived at West Hall after his death, and she also died in Rotherham aged 93 in 1883.
Their son, Erasmus Stone, was baptised in 1819 in Wentworth Chapelry. He lived during his lifetime at Kimberworth, Pontefract, Knottingley, Scarborough, Harrogate and Sculcoates. This Erasmus died in 1893 in Sculcoates.
His wife Sarah née Hollingworth lived at 344 St Georges Road on the 1901 census and in 1911 she was living at Brierdene, Cottingham, Yorkshire. Sarah died later in 1911.
We are planning a trip to the UK in November and would really like to visit ancestral resting places if I could find them.

Swiers / Swires
I’m descended from Ann Swiers (or Swires), born sometime between 1812-1835, probably in the Dacre Banks or Hampsthwaite area of Yorkshire. She married Francis Harrison, a shoemaker, born 1807, also from the Hampsthwaite area. For a while they lived in nearby Dacre Banks. They immigrated in 1849 to New York, and by 1850 they and their children were living in Keosauqua, Iowa. Ann died in 1869, probably in Keosauqua. I’d love to know who Ann’s parents and other relatives are. Any info would be very much appreciated!

I am looking for any information about John Swinbank Dinsdale or his father John Swinbank of Camm Houses. John Swinbank Dinsdale was born in 1840 and lived with his wife Hannah Moore at Duerley Bottom, Bands and Camm Houses until he died there in 1851. I am unable to find a union between John Swinbank Dinsdale’s mother, Ann Dinsdale of Westfield, Snaizeholme and the father or what happened to the father after the 1841 census. My mother thinks she remembers a reprinted article in the Dalesman in the 1950s about a robbery at Camm Houses, anything on this would be interesting.

Thomas Clifford was my grandfather known by both names, Sykes and Edwards. He was born in 1862 and is buried in Ripon cemetery. He was a showman all his life and had at least 11 children. He is connected to various families: Jefferies, Culine, Black, Mapplebeck, Duck & Scotts of Lincoln. I have photos and information to share.

Has anyone got an ancestors in their family named Moses Sykes of Batley Car who was tried and found guilty of stealing a cow and sent to Sydney, Australia about the 1820s? He was variously described as 10 years old or 12 years old or “a farmer’s boy”. He was my great-grandfather, and when “free by servitude” he worked on farms and saved his money, bought land and eventually had quite a large farm in New South Wales.
