Help please! I am trying to find any information at all about my Great Grandmother Mary Ann (Polly) Littlewood. She lived in the Almshouses at Dewsbury. She had 2 children, my Grandmother, born about 1910 ish, who I think was christened Fanny, but changed her name to Geraldine. I know Geraldine had a brother, but don’t even know his name. Geraldine married Ernest Mail, who I believe came from Huddersfield, he was certainly a proud Yorkshireman. They had a son Gerald, my father, born c.1927. He went to Almondbury Grammar School (now King James’ School), and trained as a pharmacist, moving to London. I remember a Great Uncle Gilbert Yates being mentioned when I was a child, who was said to be a Don at Cambridge. I have tried really hard to find information in the birth, marriage and death internet records and a genealogy site, about all of them but have drawn complete blanks. I have no documents or accurate dates for any of them and know so little about them. I would be very grateful indeed for any information at all.

I am looking for information on George Metcalfe, who was born 1775, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He immigrated July 12, 1834 to Underhill, Chittenden, Vermont, United States with his wife and younger children. He died May 23, 1863 in Underhill, Vermont, United States. He married Cecily Abbott or Thompson (there is many different name variations on this name). She was born August 29, 1772 in Kirklington, North Yorkshire, England and died May 12, 1855 in Underhill, Vermont, United States. They got married March 11, 1800 in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. There were 2 known witness to this marriage, William Thompson (Cecily’s father) and John Metcalfe (relationship unknown, could be father, but could be a brother, uncle, cousin, etc.). Their 3 youngest sons immigrated with them to the United States, while their oldest daughter stayed in England. Her name was Jane Ellen Metcalf, born 1801 in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England, and died March 6, 1875 in Dishforth, North Yorkshire, England. She married William H. Burnett on July 16, 1820 in Ripon. He was born 1796 in Ripon and passed away August 22, 1889 in Dishforth, England.
I’ve worked with the Metcalfe Society, and we know that George was married with the last name Metcalfe but died Metcalf. We believe the ‘e’ was lost during immigration, but beyond a Marriage Certificate, Immigration Record and a grave stone, no other information is for sure. The birth year is an estimation based of age at death. If anybody has more known information of his parents and life in England, please send me an e-mail.

I am looking for a Yorkshire connection for my Thomas Metcalf. He was born in Yorkshire (I don’t know which town), on 16 May 1779. He immigrated to America in May 1809, settling in Rockland, Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware. Thomas became a naturalized USA citizen on 3 June 1815 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. He married Mary Zebley of Rockland, Delaware and died circa November 1862 in Rockland.
After arriving in America, Thomas worked for a time in a cotton mill as a weaver and spinner. He also worked on a family farm in Rockland. One assumption is that Thomas learned his trade in Yorkshire and was recruited to work in one of the cotton mills along the Brandywine River near Wilmington, Delaware.
I’d greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who believes they may have some connection to my great-ancestor or can direct me to possible resources.

Thomas Metcalf(e), born 1780, and Mary Sandwich/Sandvidge, born 1784, were married in Bishop Burton on or about November 3rd 1802. Their children were:
Thomas Metcalf 1805 to April 1883 (I am a direct descendant of Thomas Metcalf Junior)
Robert Metcalf 1809
Mary Metcalf 1811
Christopher Metcalf 1811
All were born in Leconfield, East Yorkshire.
I am trying to trace the family of Thomas Metcalf(e) (senior). I could not find his parents or his siblings. Only clue to his family is Walter W. Metcalf. Walter may have sent a book written by Halliwell Sutcliffe ‘The White Horses’. I need to find Thomas Metcalf’s parents and the name Walter is the only connection. I think Walter Metcalf could be one of four possible relations to Thomas Metcalf. Any information acquiring Thomas Metcalf is greatly appreicated.

My great grand parents used to run the chip shop in Ingleton, my grandad Edward the only child (eddie) I think sold it 79/80. I can still remember the lovely pictures etc, he also told me about a kind lady (relative) who ran a chip shop in Liverpool. I always wondered if the fish shop was in the family prior to this as the house and bedrooms ran across the top of the bank etc next door, what naughty things children get up to with two sets of stairs! I went back several years ago and the orchards etc have all gone, that I remember playing in. I remember my Nan telling me about taking her children to meet Eddie’s grandmother, a frightening figure for her…. dressed in black with a starched white cap on sat as straight as a rod !would she be Jack or Flos mother?? Although Eddie married a girl from Birkenhead, Norah Perry, their son John, visited Ingleton as much as he could and thought of it as “home” and married a girl from the Leek family although she went on later to be called Taylor, from nearby Bentham. We still have family in both villages but from my mothers Leek/Taylor side. I know of no other family, for example did Jack and Flo have siblings and was Alice ? the lady who ran the fish shop in Liverpool, Jacks sister?

She may have been born in Bridlington to a Richard Dowson and Sarah Read. Does any-one have any information on these families? I would very much appreciate any help.

I am searching for any information on Peter (Patrick) Moran born in Ireland c.1877, who lived in Slate Street, Middlesbrough with his wife Ethel Dennis, from about 1900. He was killed in a works accident in 1933. Before moving to Slate Street they had a corner shop in Cannon Street. Any information would be great I have had lots of success with info on other family members but this Irish connection is proving to be quite difficult!!!
I am searching for information on my grandparents. Ethel Dennis was active in the local Labour Party movement and Ellen Wilkinson (Red Ellen) was a frequent visitor to their home. My Granddad was Patrick (Peter) Moran born in Ireland 1877, he was killed at work in 1933. Before moving to Slate Street they had a corner shop in Cannon Street, which I can find no information on. I believe she was also a moneylender. There was a bad fire at the shop and Ethel was badly burned, she always wore long sleeves and high necks to cover the scars.

Can anyone help me find details about the murder of my possible great-great-aunt Miss Morrell who was living in Railway Cottages of what was then Leeds Central Station. Miss Morrell was in her 70s and the only occupant of the cottages, which were being demolished. The murder took place sometime between 1948 and 1955.
My mamma remembers trying to read this in the paper as a young teenager only to have the paper taken from and told she was too young to be reading things like that. Many years later when she moved to New Zealand she was telling her future in-laws how she was reading about this Miss Morrell being murdered when her father-in-law (my granddad)finished mam’s story and said that was his auntie.
A family mystery waiting to be solved? or two different stories mixed by time, distance, and half truths?
Any help would be most welcome.

I think Robert was a painter, was born about 1803 in Aldborough & married Mary (Fulton?) in Feb 1830. I have been able to find a Thomas Mortimer who is listed as a painter & paper hanger in Pigot’s Directory of 1829 & a John Mortimer, Painter in Directory of 1834, both in Boroughbridge, but have been unable to link them to Robert so far. There are also Mortimer’s buried in St. Andrew’s Church Aldborough mainly the children of a Thomas & Mary, but no mention of Robert again. Can anyone help me trace any further back?

I have been researching the ‘Mowforth’ name for nearly 15 years and have had a good year or two but things are slowing down. I have had very little contact with people exact through Genes Reunited and most of them have got their info indirectly or directly through me. So if anyone knows of a ‘Mowforth’ or any details relating to them. They appear to have started Cumbria c1600 then moved across to North/East Yorkshire c1700, c1800, & c1900 though laterly moving further a field some down to London. They appear to have originated from farming then moved onto the Railway. They have then moved about because of their jobs.
