We are visiting the Dales for a week starting on 16th April 2011. Places of particular interest to me are Arncliffe and Litton. I have found records of great-grandfathers from 1677 to about late 1700s. Christopher Hall, born 1677, was a butcher and married Margaret Reynolds. William Hall, born 1704, was a shoemaker and married Isabel Tennant. William Hall, born 1735, married Elizabeth Heseltine and was possibly a tailor. Also George Hall, born 1761 in Cotterdale, married Agnes Thwaite and his son William, born 1782 in Lunds, went on to live in the Lakes.
It would be fantastic if someone may have some information such as a possible location where these may have lived or worked.

Seeking information on the Harker family from the Ripon-Northallerton areas. My great great-grandfather George Harker was born in about 1874 in West Witton, but I am having difficulty tracking his early years or his parents. The 1881 census shows a George (aged 7) along with Fanny (40), Robert (4) and Margaret (1) as inmates in the Union Workhouse in Leyburn, but I’m not sure if this is my man. I presume that Harker is Fanny’s married name, but it could be her maiden name. I haven’t been able to find a husband for her. Any info would be appreciated.

I am seeking any info on Jane Hatrick, born 1831 in Doncaster (who I feel may have been born a Wilson, but could be wrong). She was on census as daughter of Samuel Hattrick born in Ireland and Elizabeth (Kilvington?) of Doncaster.
Jane has 2 of her children – Alice 1851/2 and George 1854/5 – I think before she weds George Parnham in 1866. She lived with him in 1860 though.
My quest is to find out why her son George weds in the name Price in 1876 in Hull, as well as buying property in New Buckenham Norfolk in 1887 in that name. He lives as a Parnham prior to these things and dies as a Parnham in 1888 in Norfolk. Anyone know why he used this name because I’ve raked through every birth and can find none except one for George Price in Lincoln in 1854. Mother’s maiden name Wilson and father George Price. My family have a link to the name Wilson so this would make sense. But who was George’s dad? Parnham? Or a Price as she states?

I would like to find out what happened to my grandmother, Della M Hendry, after she left her family home in Harrogate in 1947. She left behind her husband and three children. My mother, her eldest child, remembers the family catching trains on Sundays trying to find where she had gone but to no avail. She never had any contact with any family member after she left. Through family history research I discovered she died in Derby 1970. Where had she been in all that time? If you can help with any information please contact me.

I am looking for relatives of Alfred Herbert born at/near Whitby c1870. He was a career soldier in the Army from c1890 – c1909 and thereafter ran the White Horse Inn in Leeds. My father, Frederick, his 5th son, was born in Harehills, Leeds on 2 July 1911. Alfred’s military career came to an end in 1915 when he was invalided out of the trenches having been badly gassed. He was serving as a Captain with the Durham Light Infantry at the time. He and his family immigrated via a family home in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, to Durban, South Africa late in 1921. I believe Grandfather Alfred had a brother and sister whom he left behind in England – most probably Yorkshire.

However I do have a Stanley Heslop, who seems to have been a bit of a character living in the Reeth area. My grandfather, Fred Wild Hirst, was born around 1876, died 1939, married to Martha Maud Ingleson in 1908, and as a child I knew him but absolutely nothing about his family. I never knew any existed. All my contact has been with the Inglesons. He was one of six children to parents Josiah and Ann Hirst – Sam Scott, Harry, Lily Lavinia, Fred Wild, Ernest Josiah, Ethel (May?). However, one thing which my father, Fred Hirst, mentioned was that he’d heard that Harry Hirst had been ‘on the stage’. Research through the Census has shown that in 1911 Harry, Lily, Ernest and Ethel were all single and living at home, 17 Airedale Square, Bradford and Harry’s occupation is ‘Music Hall Prof’. I have now drawn a blank on everything I have tried to trace him. Has anyone any ideas about how I should proceed?

William Hodgson married Jane Hodgson, I don’t know her maiden name, they had George Frederick. I think William Hodgson’s first wife Jane died and he remarried Elizabeth Parry. Elizabeth had her own child, Agnes Parry. William and George Frederick came out to Australia and George Frederick fought in the first world war in 1916 for Australia. George Frederick Hodgson married Claire Elizabeth Lunn. William went back to I think Leeds, England, where the bus company was.
I hope someone can help me with my family tree. If anyone can help me please email me.

My great-grandmother was the daughter of a Swaledale Vicar. I have no precise details of the whereabouts of the vicarage in what village. I am busy tracing her history and believe she must have been born around 1865-75 She become a single mother due to a visiting Hungarian theatre group and falling for one of them. She was disowned by her Parish Priest Father and shamed after a one night stand. This resulted in the birth of my paternal grandmother Ellen Hollingsworth, later to become Ogden due to marriage. It has been a fascinating mystery all my life through the family. My dearest wish is to unravel this story. Two of my children are quite dark skinned and I feel this has come through the genes of my paternal great-grandfather due to him being Hungarian – and a possible Count as was told down the generations of the family. I do hope someone will hear my plea and give me a little help!

I am trying to find out any information about a Charles Drury Holmes, who died in Halifax in 1885, his occupation on his death certificate is stated as Master Grocer of Halifax and the informant was an Alfred Holmes, son, of Hall St., Halifax. I believe that, for some reason, Charles Drury went by the name of John and lived/worked on Great Albion Street, Halifax. John was born in Lincolnshire in 1825 (on 1861 census) and I have been able to find a christening of a Drewry Charles Holmes in 1825 in Lincolnshire but no John.
His wife was called Jane nee Dale, born 1821 in Gristhorpe, and they had four children altogether; Eliza Dale, born in Gristhorpe in 1848; Alfred Dale born in Gristhorpe in 1850; Amelia Dale born in Scarborough in 1855 and Charles Drury Holmes born in Halifax in 1861. The three Dale children have the surname Holmes on the 1861 census. On later censuses, Alfred and Amelia call themselves \’Dale Holmes\’. Eliza married a Samuel King but died after only 1 year of marriage.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could provide any information whatsoever about this family.
Many thanks in advance.

I wonder if any of your readers are still around bearing his name? If so, I would be only too pleased to send them this small but delightfully interesting document.
