Galliford
Since I published my memoir ‘Whe’ Yu’ From?’ in which I devote a chapter to the Yorkshire side of my family, the Gallifords, I have discovered at least one mistake. The World War 1 soldier I refer to as Harry Galliford was probably Stephen H Rowe whose name appears on the war memorial at Easington, North Yorkshire.I now believe that he was the brother of my grandmother Susannah Galliford (née Rowe). Can anyone throw light on this question?

Garbutt
I’m trying to map my family history and someone may be able to help. The earliest one I have is a Leonard Garbutt born about 1763 who married a Jane Carr born about 1765. They married on 11 Dec 1786 in Marske in Cleveland. Anything earlier than that would be a big bonus.
The other stumbling block is a John Garbutt born 1857 in Hawsker, ch 7/6/1857 who married Mary Hannah Appleton born 1848. They had two children, Mary Hannah born 1882 and John born 1886. This child, John, was my grandfather who came to New Zealand. His father John apparently remarried after Mary Hannah died and maybe had at least 6 other children including possibly a Michael.
The only other clue that may relate to this remarriage and consequent children is a funeral notice from 1925 that mentions a Master Jack Garbutt, and Mr and Mrs Hebden, Sgt Robert Garbutt, Miss Clara Garbutt and a sister Miss Eva Garbutt.

I am searching for information related to Charles Garbutt (born 1892) and his wife Minnie Harrison. They came from the Roos/Hedon area, later moving to Withernsea. Charles was the son of Edith Garbutt (born out of wedlock) and was raised by his grandparents – Charles and Elizabeth Garbutt in Roos. Minnie’s obituary lists a H. Harrison as half brother. Any info would be appreciated. I will be visiting the area in July and would love to see the places they came from.

Update: Found Edith Garbutt now having married in 1903 to George Stobbart and living in Ellerker, Yorkshire. Any info on Edith and George Stobbart would be most appreciated and gratefully accepted. Photo of couple available for any relatives interested.

I am searching for any information on James ‘Jim’ Garbutt born January 28, 1923. I believe that his mother’s name is Doris Garbutt and his father was Fred Garbutt. They came for the Yorkshire area – Thirsk in the 1950s. He has a sister named Joan who has a daughter named Marguerite. Aunt or Uncle of Jim would have been Tom and Doris Garbutt who had a son named Stephen. James married Jean Evelyn (Hale) Spencer and he adopted her daughters Christine and Sharyn. James and Jean then had a daughter, Marjorie, and then a son, James, who died 3 days after birth. Any information would be helpful.

Garbutt
I am trying to trace my family history and I have reached 1853
when my Grandfather was born in Leeds Yorkshire. I think he could have been a soldier. He married Allice Gillum who was born in Pontypool 1863. They had a large family and my father was the youngest and was born in Newport Wales in 1903. My grandfather was named John Henry.

UPDATE: With a lot of help from some very special people I have found that John Henry Garbutt m Alice Gillum in 1884 and by 1901 was a Sgt Major in the army living in Newport, South Wales with Alice and 8 of his 9 children. His parents were William and Elizabeth Garbutt. There were 4 Siblings; William born 1849 Leeds, Yorkshire. Thomas P born 1853 Durham, Darlington. Alice born 1856 Middlesborough. Alfred E born Yorkshire 1861. William’s mother was Anne who lived in Northallington. I’d love to find some cousins.

UPDATE: I think that Thomas Garbutt born 1773 could be the father of William Garbutt who was born in 1797. Any help is greatly appreciated.

They all went to live in Shanghai and when the war was over William Arnold Watson returned to Skipton to visit and met and married Frances Tilley in about 1919 who had brothers and sisters, Edward, George, Elsie and Colin. Gowland
I am researching my wife’s family, the Gowlands of Maunby. In the 1841 census the name is spelt Gouland. Henry Gowland (born c1806) and Hannah Belton were married at Kirby Wiske on 13 July 1832 and had a least eight children. These were: George, Elizabeth, Henry, Thomas, Francis, William, Mary and Robert.

Robert, born in 1844 at Maunby married Catherine Harrison in 1865 in the Thirsk district. They had five children of which only Roger and Kate Augusta survived infancy. Catherine died in 1875 and Robert married Rebecca Stanhope, a close friend of his late wife in 1876 at Belper Derbyshire. In 1878 Robert & Rebecca and the two children emigrated to Bundaberg Australia. In a sad ending both died within days of each other in 1899 and are buried together in Bundaberg.

In 2002 my wife and I visited Maunby and Kirby Wiske where we saw the lovely church and grounds where some of the Gowlands are buried. We returned in 2006 with her brother and his wife but due to time restraints could only speak to a few of the residents.

Any information on the family will be appreciated.

I’m trying to find out what happened to William Green (Labourer). He got married to Rachel Rogers in 1880 in the Parish Church of Penistone. The 1881 census shows them living at Thurlstone, with their son Frederick (My great-grandfather) and step-children from her previous marriage.
In June 1883 Rachel marries again, to Abel Swallow of Huddersfield. The problem is, William is nowhere to be found. All the death certificates obtained so far are all incorrect.

I am seeking information about the origins of a Rachel Greenwood who married John Clayton, clothier, of Yeadon, Yorkshire on 25 April 1824 at Guiseley. She had several children including a son, Greenwood Clayton (christened 29 Oct 1826, Guiseley) who migrated to Australia in 1854. I have found Rachel and her husband in the 1841 census for Yeadon but it only indicates she was born in Yorkshire. Rachel seems to have died in the late 1840s so I have no way of knowing where she was born. Any help much appreciated. My husband and I are tracing his family tree. We have come to a standstill. We have been able to trace Robert Grice (born 1807) and Ann Grice (born 1804, don’t know maiden name) who came from Langtoft in Yorkshire. We know they left England late 1854 and arrived in Hobart Tasmania from Melbourne on the “Ocean Chief” 25 March 1855. We believe that they left England on the “James Baines” maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne, Australia. There are however no passenger lists available. They travelled to Australia with their four children Laban (b 1836), Dickinson (b 1839), Ellen (b 1843), and Elizabeth (birth unknown). The children were baptised in Rillington. We know they were sponsored out to Australia by a man named Esh Lovell. We cannot find any information on the family before they left Yorkshire. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Griffith
I am currently tracing back my family history and am very keen to trace John Griffiths, a master mariner, who owned a tee-Clipper.
I believe that his son, also a John, was born in approximately 1801 so would guess he would have been born around 1750-1780 but am a little confused as I have a will in my possession which throws the dates a little unless, as many of these families used to do, another John Griffth exists and his son I think of 1801 may be his grandson.
So I am looking for any information relating to John Griffith (and his family), born in the 1700s who was a master mariner and owned a tee-clipper.
