My DALE family research goes back to James DALE who married Mary EASTWOOD in 1795 in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England. They went on to have 5 children, the fourth being William, who, in 1832 married Mary Ann ABBOTT, also in Doncaster. The 1851 British Census have William and Mary Ann living at French Gate. By 1861 Mary Ann is found at Spring Gardens where she is widowed and is a boarding house keeper with 7 children. Mary Abbott DALE was one of those 7 children. She migrated to Aotearoa/New Zealand and, in 1862 she married my gg-grandfather, John Irvine SIMPSON. They lived in Timaru with their children, I have 4 at this stage. Mary Abbott SIMPSON ms DALE died in 1882 in Timaru, Aotearoa/New Zealand.

My ancestor Nicholas [or Niccolas] Dale [age 20] sailed from England on the Jacob and arrived in Virginia [America] in 1624. He is recorded as coming from York, England. One website says he came from Hutton Bushel, but there is no authenticating information provided. Are there any records where information that goes back this far might shed some light. He left England indentured to serve out the cost of his passage, but soon prospered–acquiring land, 2 wives [his 1st wife died relative to the birth of their 1st child], 16 indentured servants, et al, which suggests he was perhaps educated [and 2nd son?].

The heritage of my great-great-grandparents is my quest. Christopher Dale, a farmer of Dalton, York, married Harriet Richards of Melsonby and came to Canada in the mid 1800s. Christopher’s parents were William Dale and Elizabeth ?. Harriet’s parents were Cpl. Joseph Richards and Mary Bagley of Leeds. I would like to find the Richards/Bagley burial plot. Both died when Harriet was a young child and her mother’s sister, Aunt and Uncle Trotter, raised her.
William Dale was married before to Kate Faegan but she died young then he married Harriet and they had eleven children. Both Christopher and Harriet are buried in a cemetery in Clinton, Ontario, Canada, along with some of their children. I am especially interested in the Richards/Bagley lineage as well…

I am looking for information on the Dale family who originally emigrated from Yorkshire to Australia via (maybe) Forest Creek, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia then to Port Chalmers, New Zealand around 1873 on the ship Sword Fish. They had five children – Thomas, John, Charles, Victoria, Jane, some of which were born in New Zealand.
John or Thomas Dale married Jane Worsnip (my great-grandparents) and they had five children. My grandfather was Tom Dale and his wife was née Hill. She was the only daughter of John Hill. They had four children – Hilton, Robert, John Stanley and Allan – all born in the late 1890s to early 1900s. I was born in 1932, daughter of John Stanley and May Ashton.
The Dales were a family of miners and engineers and the family was at Ballarat at the time of the mining riots in the 1800s.
Somewhere in there was another great-grandmother called Annie Gavin of Irish decent and married to another John or Thomas Dale.

He was a widower prior to marrying my Gran (Evelyn Mann) and that side of the family was never talked about, hence the lack of any information. There was a daughter (Muriel) from that marriage and my father (Trevor Dale) never knew her. My dad grew up in Cudworth. Muriel’s surname was Stafford according to the birth certificate so wonder if she was from a first marriage or illegitimate.

He had two Daughters: Iris: born May 1940 in Raven St Bradford, and Barbara Pamela: born 6th April either 1935 or 1936 born in Birmingham. It is believed George Alan Davey lived in Immingham for a time in the old tin houses. Dates not known.

Daykin / Watson / Haigh
I’m a descendant of Metcalfe Watson and his wife, Elizabeth Haigh. I know that Metcalfe’s parents were Robert Watson and Ann Daykin. I have also learned that Elizabeth’s father was named Richard Haigh, but I am very spotty on what her mother’s name is. I have done research enough to know Metcalfe was born in or around Pateley Bridge and Elizabeth was born in Bradford. They had one son while still living in England, and they left for the States in 1871 (separately — I assume for Metcalfe to find work before his wife and child made the trek). If there is anyone who is descended from Robert and Ann (Daykin) Watson who could help me uncover a few other branches. I’m the great-grandson of Metcalfe and Elizabeth’s second son (first born in the US). I hope to hear from someone with valuable information. Thank you.

My great grandparents were John Dearing and Anne Mott Dearing; my grandfather was John William Dearing and had siblings; Geoffrey, Harry, Herbert, and Elizabeth – possibly more. My grandfather died 10 years before I was born, so I have only my late father’s passed-down stories to aid me. My grandfather said he was from Hull on the Humber, and that as a child he played in Sherwood forest. Solid recorded facts that I have are that my great uncles Herbert and Harry Dearing, who died in WWI were born in Frodingham, enlisted in Beverley, and listed Driffield as their last residence when they were killed in action in France. We were told that their names were inscribed on a War Memorial – I think this may be the one in Frodingham. As far as I know, the family all either left the Yorkshire area or died between 1914 & 1918. I believe Geoffrey and Elizabeth Dearing went to Australia; my grandfather, John Dearing travelled from Hull to Liverpool, to Cork, to Nova Scotia and ended up in the U.S.A. I do not know if any family is still left in the area, but if anyone has heard of these people or has any information about them, I would be eternally grateful for any information or leads.

I am looking for any information I can get about my gandfather John Dent. He was married to Catherine Quinessy Edwards and I believe he died in the late 1970s, and grandma 10 yrs or so later. At one time he was a tennant farmer at Flint Mill on the River Wharf. And we believe both he and grandma were in service to the Thompson-Royds. Grandad was also in the 8th army (a Desert Rat) in North Africa and has a whole slew of medals. John Dent had a cousin Jeff Richmond of Copmanthorpe. His mother was Margaret Dent whom I believe to have been John’s sister.
Grandma & grandad’s solicitors were Ware & Kay or Warren & Kay of Wetherby. My brother and myself think Grandad was cremated at a cemetary in Wetherby, but we can’t remember any details and have no other living relatives to ask. I feel as though we know a lot but I have no dates, grandma was born Dec 1900 and we think grandad’s birthday was also in Dec, but we don’t know what year or how to find out.
Any help or information will be most gratefully received. I know there are relatives out there and we hope to find some.

I am looking for information on the Dewhirsts of Dewsbury.
My great uncle Harry Dewhirst and his wife Mary Ethel lived at Vulcan Road before moving to Nursery Farm Caulms Wood during the First World War. Their son Leonard ran a haulage business from there and is recorded in the phone book from the 1930s. Sadly, he died in about 1933, when Mary Ethel took over the business and my grandad Walter drove the wagon. Harry started work as a pit driver, miner and then was a boat hauler for Calder Navigation at Ravensthorpe.
Harry and Mary Ethel moved to Southowram in 1947 to live with daughter Annie who ran the Cock and Bottle Inn, where they both died in the 1950s. They are buried in Earslheaton Cemetery. Walter, his wife Olive and their five children moved into the farm in 1947, my grandparents remained there until the late 1960s. I have fond memories of the farm and the Caulms Wood area.
I was brought up in Hanging Heaton but moved away in the early 1970s. I am now researching my family history and would welcome help from anyone who knows anything about the Dewhirsts.

My husband’s ancestors are from Bradfield, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Our earliest known Dickinson was John, born 1720 in Coldwell. There may have been a sister, Anne, who married Benjamin Milnes but I have no proof yet. He later moved to Hill House and from there to Birtin House in Oughtibridge but I have no death date. John was married to Ann Ashforth and they had 8 children.
I am interested in any information regarding earlier or later Dickinson families in that area.
John Dickinson’s great-great-grandson was Edwin, my husband’s great-great-grandfather born 1825 (son of Joseph) who went to Australia.
I have details of Edwin’s descendants and some of his brothers, i.e: John born 1815 married to Sarah Atkinson. A kind lady at the Bradfield archives has been extremely helpful with some more names and dates recently.
However the confusion about birth places for the same people can be frustrating when Benjamin Dickinson of Birtin House is the same Benjamin Dickinson of Oughtibridge.
It was not until I received the latest info that I realised they were one and the same person by working out the death dates and birth dates.
I would be grateful for any help with the Dickinson families.

I have his family line back thru Robert Bygott m. Margaret Woodall and also as far back as William Bygott m. Ellene Beale, 7 May 1598, but would appreciate any assistance prior to that date.
Once again, Thank You.

Duckworth née Smith
After researching the maternal Smith side of my family I have found of the nine children born to my great grandma, Margaret Ann Smith, that Mary may have married a Duckworth. Mary died aged fifty and is buried in the family grave in Bingley cemetery, Bailey Hills, West Yorkshire. Margaret Ann, her mother, outlived her and died in 1936 in her eighties. I would appreciate any information regarding the Duckworth connection and hope my research is beneficial also.

I am looking for information on my great-great aunt, Elizabeth Duffy (known as Betty), born about 1900 in Bradford (probably in the West Bowling area). She married Alfred Richardson in 1920 and they had one daughter, Shirley, born in Bradford around 1936. At some point the family moved to London, where Betty was in service, and I believe she died there in 1955. I have lost track of her branch of the family tree after that.
Her siblings were Mary (married name Bibeau), Margaret (known as Peggy; married name Firth), Kathleen (birth name possibly Catherine) and Edward. I would be interested to hear from any of Betty’s descendants, as well as anyone who has information about Betty’s daughter Shirley as my grandad (her cousin) would like to get in touch if possible. Shirley Richardson married Victor Masters at Islington registry office in 1955.
