I have traced my family tree back to Alan Calvert born September 5, 1456 and died in 1481.
According to all of the family trees on ancestry.com, his parents were Walter Calverly and Agnes Tempest. However, everything I have read about the Calverley family shows no son named Alan Calvert. Alan’s ‘siblings’ all have the surname Calverley and I have no idea why it would have been changed. There is no son named Alan Calverley, either.
So my question is… who are the actual parents of Alan Calvert? I have not been able to find one source for his real heritage. If anybody can help me, I would be very grateful.

I am looking for information from my father’s side of the family. His grandfather (William Calvert) was born in Yorkshire in 1880. I know that three of his children were named Russel, Barbara and Florance. It is believed that he was born in Bolton Castle. I am the granddaughter of Barbara Calvert (Horn). My father was her son, Robert Horn.
At some time William Calvert migrated to Chicago Illinois, we believe after his wife’s passing. They then moved to Mentor Ohio which is where my father was born.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Capel, Johnson, Joyner
I am tracing my great-great-great-grandmother. She was Lady Capel of Ireland. First name not known but it is thought it might have been Elizabeth. All I know about her and Lord Capel is they were born at some point in the 1700s and died in the early 1800s. As to sons and daughters this is not really known much about either apart from a son Captain Capel who was posted to India in the 1800s and a daughter my great-great-grandmother – not much again is known of her apart from she was born in the 1800s in Ireland. She then, against the wishes of the Capel family, went and married beneath her to a stable groom. Then either she disowned the family or they disowned her, that part isn’t clear.
She and Johnson left Ireland and moved to England. They ended up in York where some of the daughters seemed to have been born as one was killed by the first flying bomb to hit York in WW2. The daughters are Polly, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Alice Phoebe.
Alice Phoebe Johnson’s married name was Joyner and she was my great-grandmother born, it is thought, in Northamptonshire, Banbury on 17 March 1873. Died February 1956 at number 1 Fishery Cottages, Copper Mill Lane, Harefield, Uxbridge, UB9 6HZ. She was buried at Saint Thomas of Canterbury Church, West Hyde, Maple Cross, Kent, in plot 168.
Great-Granddad Alfred Henry Joyner was born sometime in the 1800s died March 30th may be 1940? Buried at The Church of the Holy Innocents Adisham – diocese Canterbury. They had 1 daughter and 1 son. Daughter is my grandmother Alice Capel Joyner Born 1896 Yorkshire. Died 1981 aged 81. Cremated at Garston, Crematorium, near Watford, ashes placed in the Garden of Remembrance. Her brother was great-uncle William Simon Joyner. Born? Died 1970s? Buried in Northam Church, Northam, Bideford, North Devon.
Grandmother had 3 daughters called Rosemary, Hilda and Florence Jennifer and 1 son called Richard. Florence Jennifer is my mother. When she married she swapped the names around to Jennifer Florence as she didn’t like Florence. So became known as Jennifer Florence. She died October 27 1990 aged 50 at the North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple of Cancer. Cremated Barnstple. Her ashes were placed in the ground at Harefield Church. Mum was born in Harefield next to the Grand Union Canal and lived and married there at 1 Fishery Cottages, Copper Mill Lane, Harefield, Uxbridge, UB9 6HZ.

I understand my ancestor Christopher Carter, a British surgeon, may have originated from Yorkshire.
He migrated to America, I would say somewhere between 1760 and 1776. He lived in Philadelphia, PA at the time of the American revolution.
Being a chemist, he got himself into trouble for not co-operating with the American forces in the production of gunpowder. He in due course appeared before a tribunal on which sat Benjamin Franklin.
Christopher subsequently returned to England circa 1777 to live possibly in Devon. He returned to America shortly thereafter, close to 1779, settling, this time, in New York City, still under British rule.
Christopher worked, I believe, at a Veterans’ Hospital during his stay there. He also married Priscilla Rogers in 1779.
As British rule ceased in NYC, Christopher resolved circa 1783, to find a better life for himself and his family in Canada, in Halifax, NS. From thence, he went on to St. John, NB.
Christopher finally landed in Sorel, QC circa 1786, a hub where a large number of United Empire Loyalists lived following the American revolution. Christopher worked with the veterans at the local hospital.
Historical records attest to Christopher’s skills as an entrepreneur. He also served as justice of the peace. He continued living in Sorel until his death, September 2, 1822.
Having related these events concerning Christopher Carter, we still do not anything about his earlier life. This sad state of affairs prevents us from discovering about those who preceeded him.
We look for those who could possibly shed some light concerning the earlier life of our ancestor Christopher Carter.

Her father may be a Paul Champion but I’m not certain of the area he lived. I have assumed Thomas was about the same age as his wife and I have estimated he was born about 1780-4. Thomas was a Saddler by trade and it is possible his father’s name was Joseph.
Any information on Robinson or Champion you may have would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I am researching the Chapman family who lived around Kettlewell, Starbotton, Buckden, Hubberholme, Arncliffe, Oughtershaw from 1700. I have a William Chapman and Rebecca who had children in Kettlewell from 1715-1724 but don’t know where they came from or how to connect them to the main line. William Chapman and Margery are also in Kettlewell with children born between 1713-1726 which form the main line down to my husband’s mother. Does anyone have a connection between these two or a link into Upper Wharfedale from another dale at this time? I suspect they might have come from Dent for the lead mining around Buckden, but they could equally have come from Bishopdale. It is also possible that they were Quakers and attended meetings at Scar House in Hubberholme.

I’m trying to find information for my brother in law. He was born at Carr View Avenue, Doncaster. His date of birth is 14/07/1934. His mother’s name was Cecilia Chapple. Cecilia lived at Warbreck Drive, Blackpool.
My brother in law was told his mother died early on and that is his father, who is not named on his birth certificate, then looked after him for a short while before dying in a motorbike accident in Bristol. It was thought he worked as a solicitor. My brother in law was sent to the Muller childrens home in Bristol. He was adopted as a small child into a very loving home.
He is now in his 70s and is curious about the facts behind his adoption.

My dad was found in a wood box, with a new blanket, a shilling piece, a bible and a silver fob watch on the orphanage steps.. later to be sent to Barnham workhouse and then adopted by Arthur Chenery. His name was changed from Walter Barnham to Walter Chenery (from what my dad told me, 40 years ago.) He loved his father and mother very much (I can’t remember her name), she died when my dad was 10-11years old, my grandfather then remarried soon after my then grandmothers death… the stepmother disliked my father very much… and he ran away from home at 13years old and made his home in Yorkshire, where he later married my mother Hilda Bonner. They has 2 children, a daughter and son. My brother is now deceased and I live in the USA… I know there is still family in Suffolk where my dad lived when he was adopted by Arthur Chenery. I am trying to trace the family of (James) Elijah Clarke who died at the scene of a fire in Bradford in 1838 – the inquest decided it was by ‘a visitation of God’. He had a wife and four children. He was originally a butcher but they had fallen on hard times and he had taken some work as a woolcomber. Two of his children are traceable – George (eventually a plasterer in Brighouse) and Sophia (who married a Nixon). I cannot find out the name of his wife and what happened to her and the other two children. I was told by an elderly relative that there was an Irish connection in the family but their origins are very obscure. Can anyone help?

Martin Braithwaite was born Abt. 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb February 01, 1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England North Newbald, England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this is a second marriage for Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of Yorkshire). Ann and John Leng’s son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married August 12, 1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick register, Walkington, England. By banns.
Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means “the site of the Oak Trees”. As well as being a family name in Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs. Acombs can be traced back to the 1600′s in the village of Long Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England (also have Christening June 12, 1797).
More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite: Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England .
Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial: Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830, (Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark, b. I have thus far found his marriage record to Rosa Lavinia Moore on 9 Nov 1884 and found him in census records after his marriage but am having no luck finding him in earlier censuses from before marriage. His marriage record does not include his father’s name which I believe to be in consideration for his wife – as she was illegitimate he also didn’t include father’s name.

Trying to find the parents and any siblings of Thomas Richard Coates, born about 1855 in Huntington (according to the censuses). In 1861 he was living with a Thomas Smithson, joiner, and wife Jane in Huntington — he is listed as nephew. All further census information shows him living with the Smithsons as nephew or later apprentice, until he sets up his own household in Huntington, married to Mary Ellen Dixon, also of Huntington. On the marriage certificate he lists his father as Joseph Coates, stonemason, but I am unable to find any records of Joseph Coates except one stonemason by that name born in Falsgrave about 1823, who appears in the 1851 census still living in Falsgrave. Can anyone help me determine whether this is the right Joseph Coates? And what happened to Thomas Richard Coates’s parents? I also cannot find a birth record for Thomas to confirm he was born in Huntington.

My late grandfather, Robert William Strathearn de Chilton Coulson, was born in the Whitby-Robin Hood’s Bay area of Yorkshire in the 1880′s or thereabouts. I remember his telling me that, as a boy, he sang in a choir which processed up the Whitby steps on holy days to sing at St. Mary’s (Hilda’s) abbey. His two sisters were Helena and Mary Coulson. Helena (Len) married a man named Robson. Grandad ran away to sea as a teenager and, after meeting my grandmother in Galveston, Texas, lived the rest of his life in the United States. His sisters lived out their lives in England. Grandad’s father was a sea-captain and I think had other ships as well. I would so like to find out about my great-grandparents (both of whom died young) and other ancestors. Could anyone be so kind as to let me know any information with regard to my family? Thank you very much.

William Cundall was shown as a Tailor on his son’s marriage certificate in June 1869 at Marske, nr Saltburn. His son was John Cundall who married Margaret Lazenby, both of Saltburn Yorkshire. John was 26 and I am tring to trace his father and back from him. He probably originated in Nun Monkton near York.

My great grandfather, Thomas Currey, was married at Kirby Knowle near Thirsk in 1838. By 1844, he had moved to Sherburn near Scarborough.Does anyone have any further info about brothers, sisters, cousins etc from the Thirsk area? There were several Curreys in Boltby and Felixkirk at the time, but I have not worked out their relationships so far. I will be more than happy to share what little info I do have with anyone who is interested. Geoffrey. March 2008.

I am trying to trace Charlotte Curtis, born about 1841 from either the Tickhill or Thorne areas of Doncaster, particularly her parents, thought to be Thomas and Elizabeth. She eventually married John Gibbons in Hull. Any information appreciated. Other than these details I have drawn a blank.

I am looking for information on the Curtis family of Sheffield. My line is through William Curtis (b.1745) and Hannah Egborough (b.1750). I suspect that William’s father was John Curtis (born about 1720). William Jr’s son Frederick (b. 1791) and his wife Martha were the parents of Ann Curtis who married Thomas Spencer and emmigrated to Shelburne Falls, MA in the 1860s.
