Following my birth, I was given over to Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, and adopted by an American family. While searching online for information on my g-uncle William Badham, I came across a possible death in FreeBMD in Richmond Yk, 2nd qtr 1941, age 66, which would make the deceased the right age. I thought it might be possible to investigate the identity if there’s an obituary in a local paper. What would be a likely local Newspaper in 1941?

I am interested in the Baggan family that lived in Pontefract, with seven daughters. I’m researching all six of them that married: Eccleston, Pickup, Ponsonby, Scholes, Sykes & Woffenden. The Baggin family that lived in Sheffield would have lived in Ireland for a time as one of the sons, George, was born there. Anyone have any of these names in their tree?

I’m searching for a Bailey family that began with a Thomas Bailey of Liverpool (or Bangor N. Wales) marrying a Sarah Jane Moody in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, as shown in the 1861 census. It appears that Thomas had an engineers job connected to the railways. The couple had several children including two sons who are, in later censuses, shown as being a Joiner and a Decorator. The address ‘Picturesque Terrace’, Hull, seems to feature around 1900. After a mass of research, it seems that I am, at age 64, the last ‘son’ (having no children) of this Bailey line going back to Liverpool to 1837 ie. unless the descendants of Thomas can be traced. Anyone in Hull have any advice?

I also have an Uncle Ronnie (Barker) born 14 April, 1930 in Boosbeck, who reportedly died in the 1950’s but I can’t find his death certificate or where he is buried. If anyone knows anything about him I would love to know.

I am looking for information on Richard Robert Barker born about 02 Feb 1817 in Bolton, Yorkshire, England. He was married to Martha (either Flathers or Barrett) 29 Jun 1824 Bradford, Yorkshire, England. They had two known children, Joseph Robert barker born 03 Jan 1848 in Bradford and Hannah Elizabeth barker born 1851(?) Richard’s father may have been John Barker born around 1804 and married to an Ann. Richard and his son Joseph were stone masons and free masons. They emigrated to Weston, York County, Ontario, Canada in about 1851. We loose Hannah so she may have died in England. Richard also may have had a brother named John Barker also a stone mason in Bradford, Yorkshire, England

Barker and Stables
I am looking for information on this family. John Barker married Mary Stables in about 1825; they were both born about 1804-1806. Their children were Ann, born 1826; William born 1827; twins Benjamin and Johnathan born 1836; and twins Jane and Sarah born 1839. In the 1841 census the family was living in Bramley (civil parish), Leeds Borough, Yorkshire in the subregistration district of Kirkstall on Killingsbeck’s Yard. John Barker’s profession was in clothery. The census says they were all born in Yorkshire. I found a John Barker christened in Dobcross, Yorkshire on 12 Aug 1804 with parents William Barker and Ann. I don’t know how to prove or disprove if this is my John Barker or not. I have found all of the chilren’s birth dates on the LDS website. One of the twin daughters, Sarah, was born in Horsforth on 6 Aug 1838.
The entire family emigrated to the US and John Barker and Mary Stables are found in Akron, Ohio in the 1850 census. Daughter Ann has married Daniel Priest and is living in Wisconsin. The other children are either living in Akron or with Ann Barker Priest.
Is anyone researching this family in England? Does anyone have any hints as to where I might search next? I have more information after they came to the US but am looking for additional information in England. Although, I am still looking for the death date of John Barker, the father, and for his parents and the parents of Mary Stables.

My cousin Susan Pinson in Sydney, NSW, Australia is looking to see if our grandmother’s Barnes relations are connected to Samuel Barnes who sailed as clerk with Revd. Richard Johnson Chaplain to the First Fleet 1787 on the Golden Grove ship.He is not recorded after 1793. The chaplain was from Welton near Brough, Yorshire. Samuel may have been born in 1760s in that area.Does anyone have an ancestor Samuel Barnes who went to NSW in 1787?
By coincidence, Grandma White’s brother was also Samuel Barnes born about 1866 in the Attercliff district of Sheffield and he died in Scunthorpe in the 1930s-40s.

Louis Barnes was my grandmother. She married my grandfather Samuel Maranian around 1904. She had three sons Edward, Steven and Maurice. She also had a daughter who died young. Louis died in 1913 in Istanbul apparently from child birth. I know very little about her except that she was from Leeds. I do have a photograph of her.

I am a descendant of William Hill Barrick, born 1842 in Whitby, son of Henry (born about 1810) Barrick and Catherine Boyes who were married in 1837. Henry and Catherine appear to have moved to London. After the death of Catherine, Henry married Rebecca Jefferson. William Barrick travelled to South Africa where he married Jane Temperance Baxter in June 1863, had two children, returned to the UK for the birth of their third child, Florence Lavinia, and may then have returned to SA. Jane’s death is recorded there.
I would like to research further back than Henry and Catherine of Whitby/London, but find I am confused by the number of different Henry Barricks of Whitby.
I have looked at 19th Century newspapers online, searching all the BMD announcements for the name Barrick listed over many years but this has caused more confusion – although I did find a bankruptcy notice for a Henry and George Barrick, Ship Builders of Whitby in 1866. I also have an 1814 will for a Henry Barrick downloaded from the National Archives.
Given my present confusion, I wonder whether anyone would mind sharing any information they have that may help me to pursue the right ancestors.

Matthew BELL (1812-1870) married Mary Lonsdale DOWSON at St.Andrews, Auckland, Co. Durham in 1834 and moved to Healagh in North Riding of Yorkshire soon afterwards. Here he worked as a lead miner for about 10 years before the family moved back to Co.Durham, firstly to Coundon, then North Bitchburn, then Crook before emigrating to Australia in 1857 to mine for gold.
Their 11 children were – Isabella b.1835-d.1835, Grinton; Robert b.1836, Healaugh; Michael b.1838, Healaugh; Mathew (Martheaw) b.1839, Healaugh; Mary Jane b.1841, Isle of Man, Eng; Ann Lonsdale b.1844, Healaugh; Isabella b.1847, Coundon, Co.Durham; Joseph b.1848 Nth Bitchburn; James b.1851, Nth Bitchburn; Elizabeth b.1854-d.1860, Crook; and Margaret b.1856, Crook, Durham.
Matthew BELL was the Publican of an Inn and Board establishment in c.1841. This was presumably run by his wife Mary BELL.
I would like to hear from anyone who thinks they have a link to this family. Any comments, suggestions or information about the possible ancestry of Matthew BELL b.1812 or Mary Lonsdale DOWSON bpt.1814 would be of great interest.

My ancestors have been traced back to Helm near Askrigg about 1700, it appears that a few Bells from Wensley had moved to Askrigg in the mid 1600’s. I would like to contact anyone with Bell connections or knowledge from Wensley from 1500’s to 1600’s. Before this time the Bells possibly came from another area that I have no information on as yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update: To add to my older posting I am asking for contacts of any Bell descendants from the areas of Gunnerside, Askrigg, Semmerdale, Walden, Dent, Wensley, Sedburgh or Kentsbank near Cartmel as I have descendancy from these areas.
I am also looking at the established Bell connections between Wensley, Fawdington, Brafferton, Thirsk, Bellassis Northumberland, Cartmel, Kentsbank, Garstang and Woodplumption in an effort to work out my earlier ancestry back to the mid 1400s.
The above connections will also link most of the Yorkshire Bells together and include at least some of the Durham Bells as well.
I have been to several of the Yorkshire areas and hope to visit other areas in due course.

I am doing research on my father’s family (Metcalf). My gr,gr, grandparents were Charles and Mary Ann (Page) Metcalf. Charles was born between 1822 and 1824. Mary Ann was born 1819 in Holme Upon Spaulding Moor. They were married in 1845 in Kirby Grindalythe. His father was William Metcalf. I do not know his mothers name but we are guessing it was Jane because their first born daughter was named Jane. Charles and Mary Ann and their daughter Jane sailed out of Liverpool and landed in New York in 1850. They moved on and settled in Wisconsin where she had relatives. I can not find any records with the name of Charles’s place of birth other than Yorkshire. I am following a lead that he was born in Langton and I can only find him listed on the census of 1841 as an ag laborer in Weaverthorpe so this may be the correct person. Bolton / Boulton

Their only son James, born 1867, possibly spent some time in HM Prison Hull (1891 census), and i’d love to know why. Also in the 1881 census a woman called Bridget Kenn(e)y, Hawker, resided with them. She is described as the mother in law to the head of the house, but I can find nothing else about her. I’ve recently started researching my family history and wonder if anyone has information regarding my great-grandfather Benjamin Booth who married Martha Crane in 1893. I think that my grandfather James Harold Booth was one of 10 children from Benjamin and Martha, with some of them being born overseas – in particular, William Crane born in 1896 in Valetta, Malta (died on 6 July 1916 from his wounds during the Battle of the Somme) and Edith Ann born in 1900 in the Garrison of Aldershot and Mary Lilian born in 1902 in Mullingar in the Meath area (Ireland) but later died in 1913. From the records I have found, I believe the names of the other 6 children were:- Fred, Emily, Edward, Gerald, Clarence and George. Unfortunately, all I know about these siblings were that they were all older than my grandfather (James Harold born in 1909) with the exception of Gerald who has been recorded as younger. I believe that the majority of the male members of the family were enlisted in the military (mostly army) and that Gerald was based somewhere in Italy. I have seen records that state that my great-grandfather Benjamin was a Company Sergeant Major in the West Riding Regiment of the army and was also a recruiting officer.
Benjamin was born in Huddersfield in 1894, the son of a Weaver also named Benjamin. Benjamin’s mother was named Jane Charlesworth. Unfortunately, I don’t have any further information about Benjamin Sr and Jane. If you recognise any of these names and details, I’d be delighted if you could provide me with any further information so that I can build up my family tree.

My dad Andrew was born 8/3/1952 to a single mother, after roughly 3 months of trying to take care of him he was adopted by David and Rose Petch from Hull. For whatever reason his adopted parents and mother managed to keep in touch for the first year of his life until his birth mother got engaged and his adopted father for fear of losing their new son severed all ties.
Although my father shows no interest to his actual heritage, I do and would love to be able to trace my blood routes.
The Boroughbridge surname may well be his place of birth but he was always under the impression he was born in Malton. For this period in time I would imagine this would be a rare case as for a start the two parents kept in contact for a short while at least as well as the 3 months she actually tried to keep him.

I have been researching my line for years but I want to prepare something for my husband and present it to him on our anniversary. I have gotten as far as Christopher Bradshaw, born about 1745 in Yorkshire, England. His son Barnabus was born in North Carolina. If anyone can assist me in gathering more info on my husband’s Bradshaw line, I would greatly appreciate it. I am in New Mexico, but can also do research in Colorado and Texas if anyone needs.

I am looking for any connections to George Bradshaw born 14/5/1932. His siblings were Lillianne, Brian and Joseph (twins), all born in Manchester. His father was Joseph and his mother, Mary Walkden, died young. George and Lillianne were brought up by Uncle Arthur, and Brian and Joseph were brought up by an Aunt (I think Lillianne). Uncle Arthur was a bank manager in Barnsley.

Born: 20 March 1893, in Barnsley, Yorkshire. [I have birth certificate.]
Harry Married Ethel Snaith on 01 September 1915, in Chesterfield, England [I have marriage certificate].
I have all of Harry’s army records: York & Lancaster Regiment world War 1, he worked in the coal mines in Barnsley.
Harry and Ethel were divorced on 13 June 1919, in England, [I have extract from the principal Registry].
Harry and Ethel had two children;

Ethel Braithwaite [née Snaith] and her two children came to Australia in 1925, they travelled to Australia with her parents.

I’m researching Stephen Thompson Braithwite who was born about 1875 in Kendal, Westmorland and died in 1930 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. He married Lillian Ibbotson who was born about 1875 in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
They were married about 1898 in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
The 1911 census shows Stephen Braithwaite was living at 25 Longcar Street Barnsley with his daughter, Gwendoline, then aged 10 years.
However the 1911 census also shows Lillian Braithwaite (née Ibbotson) living at 103 Milton Road Hoyland, Barnsley as a house keeper to a James H Poxon & BMD index as Marriage – 1930 -Qtr 4 -Vol 9c – 608.
We can not find a death for Lillian Braithwaite, but can find one for Lillian Poxon in Sheffield.
I can find no trace of any other children for either Ibbotson, Braithwaite or Poxon.
There are further details of parents and siblings of both Lillian and James.
It looks like Lillian may have left Stephen Braithwaite to live with James Poxon who she married only when Stephen died.
Any help on this part of my family would very much appreciated, thank you.

Martin Braithwaite was born Abt. 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb February 01, 1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England North Newbald, England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this is a second marriage for Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of Yorkshire). Ann and John Leng’s son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married August 12, 1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick register, Walkington, England. By banns.
Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means “the site of the Oak Trees”. As well as being a family name in Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs. Acombs can be traced back to the 1600’s in the village of Long Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England (also have Christening June 12, 1797).
More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite: Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England.
Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial: Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830, (Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark, b. January 03, 1834, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. v. Emma Jane Clark, b. April 22, 1835, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vi. Matilda Clark, b. June 04, 1837, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vii. Maria Clark, b. May 26, 1838, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England.

I am looking for relatives of William Braithwaite, born in 1895 in Dacre Banks, and his wife Evelyn Townsend, also born in 1895.
They married in 1924 and lived in Follifoot. They had three children – Jean, born 1925, George, born 1926 who died soon after birth and Derek, born 1929.
I think Derek died in 1999 in Beverley. I do not know if he was married or had children. Jean did marry but unfortunately I do not know her married name. I think she had two boys and that she lived in Harrogate within the last ten years.
I have several photos and letters about this family that their relatives might be interested to see.

Brayshaw / Lassey (Lacy) / Stokes / Kaye
I am searching for the family of John William Brayshaw b. abt. 1776 probably in York. Married 1795 in York, Yorkshire to Mary Sykes Stokes b. 1778. John William died 4 April 1848 in Yorkshire. They had the following children: Sarah b. 7 July 1803; Nancy b. 7 April 1806; Elizabeth b. 20 Aug. 1808 married 7 August 1831 in Almondbury, Yorkshire, to Joseph Kaye: Harriet M. Brayshaw b.15 April 1811 married 25 Dec 1830 in Almondbury to Abraham Kaye (brother of Joseph); William b. 30 Oct 1813, married 13 August 1838 in Parish Church, Parish of Dewsbury, York County to Julia Lacy (daughter of Squire Lassey and wife Hannah Greenwood); James b. 9 April 1819 m. Jane Melville.
We believe that Sargent John William Brayshaw fought in the 51st Foot Regiment in the Battle of Waterloo but cannot find proof. Census return for 1841 for Linthwaite: “John Brayshaw, 65, clothier, Mary Brayshaw, wife, 60, Charlotte, 15″.
The Lassey (Lacy) family lived in Boothroyd, a section of Dewsbury. Squire Lassey, age 50 and Hannah (Greenwood) Lassey, age 55, were the parents of Julia Lassey married to William Brayshaw. Edward, age 15, and Joseph, age 13 were their sons and brothers to Julia. Joseph, age 6 and Hannah, age 2, must have been grandchildren of their son, Thomas. Thomas names a son, Joseph and daughter, Hannah in his Will signed 19 July 1868. He was spelling his name Lacy by this time and lived in Boothroyd Lane in Dewsbury in the County of York.
The Brayshaws, William and wife Julia Lacy Brayshaw emigrated to America and arrived in January 1841. It appears that this was about the same time that Elizabeth Brayshaw Kaye and husband, Joseph Kaye as well as Harriet Brayshaw Kaye and husband Abraham Kaye emigrated to America. They settled initially in the Baltimore area.

I am researching my family name of Brear. My father, George Henry, was born 25 May 1922 at Vernon Place, Undercliffe, Bradford.
His parents were Thomas Brear born 17.7.1872 at Lambert Row, Bolton, Bradford who got married on 21.7.1902 to Elizabeth (née Fletcher) born 13.7.1877 at Malt Kiln Fold (the Fletchers worked at Guiseley Brickworks, Yeadon). They ran the Green Man Inn at Undercliffe, Bradford, and they also worked for a time at the Lamb Inn, Dewsbury and Scarborough where the pub/hotel was The Oxford I think. Then they returned to Vernon Place, Undercliffe, Bradford.
Thomas’ parents were George Brear born 29.8.1874, Back Fold, Manningham, Bradford and Sarah Ann Tempest, born 1847 at Malt Kiln Inn, Bradford. They married on 13.8.1870. Sarah Ann died on 29.4.1873 and Thomas was brought up by his grandparents (Joshua and Ann Tempest) at The Malt Kiln Inn, Idle Road, Bolton, Bradford.
George got married again to Hannah Ellen Broadley in 1874 in Bradford. They had 5 children: Harriet, John, Florence, Ida E, James Herbert. George was a train driver and worked in various posts for the Railway Co. living in Keighley and in the 1911 census in Holbeck, Leeds.
George’s parents were John Brear, christened 23.2.1816, Bradford and who married, on 5.2.1842 in Bradford, Jane Stott who was born at New Church on Rosantale, Lancs.
John’s father was also John. I think he married a woman called Martha.
This is where my research stops. If anyone knows any information that could be useful please let me know.

I am researching my father’s family, the Broadheads who lived in Barnsley. My grandfather was called Edward Vivian, born in 1896. He was sent to live in Canada at the age of 14 – with his mother’s brother & family. Edward’s mother was born Caroline Agnes Taylor in 1871, & his father Alfred William Broadhead in 1868. They married in 1892. Caroline had 8 siblings: George (1867), Arthur (1869), Amy (1875), Percy (1877), Frederick (1879), Harold (1881), Harry (1883) & Florina (1884). Amy went to New Zealand in the early part of the 20th century, Caroline & Alfred going with them. Alfred died there a few years later. Edward had a brother called Harry. My grandfather lived with Frederick Taylor in Winnipeg, Frederick having moved there around the same time I believe as Caroline & Alfred taking the family to NZ.
Caroline’s parents were Caroline Witpen & George Taylor. Caroline Taylor’s father accidentally drowned in the 1890s which appears to be suicide. Alfred’s parents were Hannah Rogers & Samuel Broadhead – they were schoolmasters in the Barnsley area at West Bretton School. Alfred had 4 siblings: Gertrude (1871), Florence (1872), Harry (1881) & Muriel (1882). Samuel’s parents were Joshua Broadhead & Mary Goddard. Samuel had the following siblings: John (1841), David (1843), Sarah (1844), Joshua (1848), Mary (1850), Ann (1851), Lydia (1853), Leila (1855) & Clara (1859) All born is Austonley. I have marriages so far for (besides Samuel!) John & David. Joshua’s father was a John Broadhead, his mother was Lydia Butterworth. From the info I was directed to, I can trace the family back to around 1600. I wondered if anyone might have any info on the Broadhead or Taylor families.
I am hoping for further info on Caroline after she moved back to England in 1904 – photos, letters or diaries.

I hope someone can help me. I am seeking information about the ancestors of Arthur (1918), Fred (1920) and Emma (1921) Broadhead who lived in Horbury near Wakefield. Their mother was a Reynolds (Edith?). Apparently their father died in an accident while at work on/for the railways in Yorkshire.

I am researching my father’s family, the Broadheads who lived in Barnsley. My grandfather was called Edward, he was born in 1896. He was sent to live in Canada at the age of 14 – with his mother’s brother & family. Edward’s mother was born Caroline Agnes Taylor in 1871, & his father Alfred William Broadhead in 1868. They married in 1892. Caroline had 8 siblings:George (1867), Arthur (1869), Amy (1875), Percy (1877), Frederick (1879), Harold (1881), Harry (1883) & Florina (1884). Caroline Taylor’s father accidentally drowned in the 1890’s which appears to be suicide. Joshua’s father was a John Broadhead – I think I may have located his mother, she was called Lydia Butterworth! From the info I was directed to, I can trace the family back to around 1600. I wondered if anyone might have any info on the Broadhead or Taylor families……..any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find my rootes so far I have gone back to James Pearson who was the son of a John Pearson (c1673 – 1740 a Wheelwright), who was born c1723 in Loughton en le Morthen, Yorkshire. James Pearson moved to Fishlake, Yorkshire where he became a Keelman working on the large keel boats on the canals between Sheffield and Thorne. He met and married a Mary France on 28/5/1751. His son was Richard Pearson Started a shipbuilding business at Thorne Quay (now waterside) just outside Thorne. His house was Field House, on the main road into Thorne. His wife was Ann Birks. James died of apoplexy in 1778. I have come across qute a few Pearsons from Loughton en le Morthen. Nicholas Pearson’s 1672 he lived in Laughton en le Morthen and is mentioned in the history of the village as being heavily taxed for having 14 hearths. He had a son John but cannot prove its the John above. William Hunt Pearson took over the shipbuilding Business and moved to Hull. Robert Pearson his elder brother, and who I am related to, moved to London to look after Stanton’s Wharfe the london end of the business. His second wife was Hannah Brodrick elder sister of Cuthbert Brodrick the famous Victorian Architect. I would love to hear from anybody who may be connected with this family.

I am looking for information about my father’s aunt who kept a furrier’s shop in Knaresborough around the turn of the century. Outside the shop she displayed the Prince of Wales crest, so she must have sold furs to the prince before he became King Edward VII. I have done quite a lot of research into my ancestry but the following details are a bit of a stumbling block.
I am searching for any information about the descendants of Allen Brook born 1854 to Robert Brook (1818-1872) and Betty née Dyson (1818-1898).
Allen had an older brother Joe born 1851, younger siblings Ann born 1857 and William born 1857 (possibly twins) but William died in 1858. Their father also had a previous marriage to Selina Rawcliffe and they had 3 children – Martha born 1841, Dick born 1846 and Ellen born 1846 (again possibly twins).
Allen married Laura Hughes Clark on 24.12.1880 at Helme Parish Church, Helme, Huddersfield and they had two sons: George Robert Brook born 12.11.1881 and Charles William Brook born 17.10.1883, both born in Netherton, South Crosland. Laura died 13.3.1899 at 77 May Street, Crosland Moor.
Allen married Lilias Brown in September 1899 and they also had 2 sons, born at 77 May Street, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield. My grandad Albert Brook was born 26.7.1900 and his brother Arthur was born in 1904 (I think). I am desperate to find anything, about Arthur especially.
I believe that Charles William married a Gertrude Cockhill on 6.9.1913 but have no further information on any descendants of George Robert, Charles William or Arthur. Please can you help? Are you a descendant/relative of any of these relatives of mine?
I can remember going to a house at Golcar in Huddersfield, as a little girl and my mum and her brother Leslie calling the older lady Auntie Pattie – was she married to George Robert? They had a cousin called Marion who I believe her married name to be Moore. They also had a cousin Kenneth Brook – could he be a son of Arthur?

In 1816 my great-great-great-grandfather, Richard Gospel, married a girl called Elizabeth Brough who came from Gilling, near York. Elizabeth already had a daughter, Mary, who had been born out of wedlock in 1814. Richard took the girl on and treated her as his own. Richard died in 1840 leaving mother and daughter together with six children that Richard had fathered alone. They lived in Bishop Wilton near Pocklington and Mary went into service at nearby villages. She had four illegitimate children, all boys, who took the name Brough. As the family extended some took York as a base, some moved to North Yorkshire, to Pontefract and Worksop and a girl called Rhoda Brough married into a family called Hall at Pateley bridge. I would welcome any information about these families as I am relatively well advanced in my quest to complete the family to present days and now want to share this information and put some flesh onto the bones of the family tree.

I am searching for my great-grandfather Alfred Burford who was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1854 but who married Mary Ann Wilkins, also born in Stroud Gloucestershire, in Brunswick Chapel, Leeds in 1874. Mary Ann Burford died in 1880 in Leeds Infirmary after my grandmother Lucy Burford was born in 1876. They lived at 9 Kenealy[?] Street, Leeds.
Alfred then disappeared from censuses and I have no idea where he went, but his sister, Anne Dangerfield, had a nephew living with her in 1901 census at 36, Langford Street, Headingley, Leeds, whose name was Alfred Burford, born 1891 in London.
Can anyone help me with this mystery please? On his wedding certificate Alfred Burford’s occupation was Railway platelayer.

I am seeking information about Kenneth Burke or his descendants. He was born in the 1920s. His parents were Vida (nee Halliwell) and ? Burke of Halifax. His grandmother was one of five sisters born to Hannah (nee White) and Richard Smales, of Walton, near Wakefield. Two other sisters married, respectively, Tom Bradshaw of Bedfordshire and F W Maynard of Ingleby Greenhow. At least three generations of the Halliwell family were Halifax butchers. In the 1930s Horace was in business at 42 Market and Herbert at 2 Market and 25 Manor Drive, Free School Lane, Halifax. Kenneth Burke’s father was a verger at Halifax Parish Church. It is understood that Kenneth worked for Messrs Collinson, who had a number of branch cafes in Yorkshire towns.

My Great Grand Parents on my mother’s side, Hannah (nee Wedgwood) and Thomas Burns lived at Bank Farm, Raw Fylingdales. They married in 1882, Thomas was a widower with 8 children, they then had 9 children between them my grandmother Annie being third youngest. I have all their dates of birth but seem to have drawn a blank. Surely with such a large family there must be others out there looking for them, would love to hear from any of them.

My maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Anne Robinson (nee Burns), was the neice of Robert Burns, schoolmaster at Great Fryup. The 1881 census has him and his family living at the school cottage and he was still there for the 1901 census. He, like my grandmother was born in Manchester, but they seem to have had family connections in Whitby and York. My aunt Phyllis, as a teenager, visited them and a cousin Gertrude who lived at a ‘farm at Robin Hoods Bay sometime around 1920. There was an Elsie Burns at this time who lived in Whitby. The family links seem to be Manchester, Salford, York and Whitby. All my immediate Robinson family connections are now dead.

I’m looking for more information regarding the family Burton who lived in Goldthorpe, Barnsley.
Albert Burton (my great-grandfather) was married to Rose Bennett, they had four children: Betty, Irene, Albert (who died when he was 11 years old) and Joyce.
I know they ran a corner shop in Goldthorpe until Albert Burton remarried in the late 1940s after Rose dying at the age of 43.
I also know that Albert was apparently a carpenter and that Rose was the cook for the Mayor of Barnsley but I am unsure of the dates.

I am searching for any information about a Marguerite Butterworth, formerly known as Marguerite Best. She lived at 21 Fairfield Avenue, Kirk Ella, Beverley, East Yorkshire, around the year of 1945 when she gave birth to me at the Westwood Maternity Home, Beverley on 8th Sept 1945. I understand that after I was adopted by another couple in March 1946, Marguerite went to live in America with my father who was an American serviceman. Did anyone know Marguerite Butterworth/Marguerite Best? Did you live near her in Fairfield Avenue? Do you know the name of the American serviceman with whom she associated? She may well have passed away by now, but I would just love to find out as much as I can about her as my whole family is very interested in our history. PS: Sydney Hobbs was the registrar who issued my birth certificate, and Cecil H Walker was the Superintendent Registrar who noted my adoption – all under the ‘Holderness’ District.

I am looking for descendants of John Butterworth and Betty Heap. Their daughter Frances (Fanny) married Batty Robert Iveson July 4, 1799 at Todmorden. Batty Robert and Fanny are my great-great-great grandparents. They lived in Rochdale as the Ivesons had a harness and saddlery shop at 46 Drake Street. This shop stayed in the Iveson family until the late 1990s. John Butterworth married Betty Heap on October 20, 1780 in Rochdale. I do not know his date of death but he is buried in Scotland. John and Betty had four children according to a copy of his will. They were Frances, Joseph, William and Betty. I placed an advert in the ‘Rochdale Observer’ but did not get any replies and since a family member was kind enoug to send me the Dalesman (which I love to read) I thought I would try again.
