I am looking for information about my great-great-great-grandad Joseph Abbott, born about 1803, who had a son Thomas born in Heptonstall, Yorkshire in 1829. Thomas’s mother was called Alice.
There is no mention of Joseph or Alice from that date.
In the 1851 census Thomas is living with a Blakey Hartley and his wife Betty. Thomas married Rachel Atkinson. No one has been able to find out what happened to Joseph and Alice, or where they were born, married or died. Anyone who knows of Joseph, Alice, Blakey and Betty, it would be very welcome.

I am trying to confirm and complete my family tree. I believe my family descend from a William Abbott and Elizabeth Kirby who lived in Kirklington and married in 1742. They had several children, one of which was a William Abbott born 1755 who married a Sarah. They lived in Kirklington but at some stage must have moved to Well. They appear to have had 3 children, one of which was a Charles Abbott, my great grandfather. If anyone has any information on the Abbott’s of Kirklington and Well I would welcome their input. Charle’s wife was called Ann and came from Easingwold. She was born c 1831 and may be an Ann Dunhill but again I am looking for confirmation.

Martin Braithwaite was born around 1770. He married (1) Ann Acomb February 01, 1796 in (also have Jan 02, 1796) Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England North Newbald, England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this is a second marriage for Ann Acomb, her first marriage was to John Leng, of Yorkshire). Ann and John Leng’s son William went to Canada c 1822. Martin Braithwaite married twice, his second wife was Hannah Ranson and they married August 12, 1827 in (also have Dec 08, 1827 as date) Osbaldwick register, Walkington, England. By banns.
Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means “the site of the Oak Trees”. As well as being a family name in Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs. Acombs can be traced back to the 1600’s in the village of Long Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England (also have Christening June 12, 1797).
More about Richard Clark and Mary Braithwaite: Marriage: January 28, 1815, North Newbald, England .
Children of Mary Braithwaite and Richard Clark are:
i. Eliza Clark, b. Abt. 1816; d. 1852, Kirk Ella, England; m. William Ransom, April 27, 1839, Welton, England. ii. James Braithwaite Clark, b. Abt. 1826; d. May 20, 1843, Kirk Ella, England. Burial: Kirk Ella, England. iii. George Martin Clark, b. March 08, 1830, (Baptized date) at Welton, England. 3. iv. George William Clark, b. January 03, 1834, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. v. Emma Jane Clark, b. April 22, 1835, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vi. Matilda Clark, b. June 04, 1837, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England. vii. Maria Clark, b. May 26, 1838, (Baptized date) at Melton near Welton, England.

I am descended from Thomas Addyman and his wife Maria (Robinson). Maria was born in Thornthwaite. In 1841 Thomas and his family were living in Hole House, Laverton, which is, I understand, near a town called Kirkby Malzeard. I have a newspaper cutting which states that Thomas and his family set sail for America on Good Friday 1845. After surviving a collision with an iceberg they arrived in the US on 25 June 1845. The family settled on a farm near Epworth, Dubuque Co, Iowa, USA. Can anyone tell me anything about Hole House and Laverton or, indeed, anything about Thomas and Maria?

I am looking for my grandfather Thomas William Alderson. He was born in 1888 in Crook, County Durham, his parents were William and Mary Alderson, who had 7 children: Mary Jane; Thomas William; Florence Edith; Margaret Louisa; Christine; Hilda May and Ada.
The 1911 census gives their address as 3 Bowden Yard, Willington, Durham. I know that Thomas William Alderson married Sarah Jane Branston/Brankston on the 16th October 1909 at the Registry Office Auckland. They had 1 child, Ada May Alderson, born 1910. Thomas William Alderson was alive in 1911 as he is listed on the census so he must have died between 1911 and 1918 as his wife Sarah Jane remarried 21st August 1918 to a Joseph Thurlby and on their wedding certificate it states both were widowed. I cannot find Thomas William Alderson’s death certificate nor can I find out what happened to their daughter Ada May. I believe a Benjamin Alderson may be my great great great grandfather. I have traced the birth of a Benjamin Alderson to Kirkby Wharfe in 1787 (parents Robert Alderson and Jane Scott) . I think he may be the same man who married Eleanor Waite in Barnard Castle in 1806. I have traced a death record for a Benjamin Alderson in 1848 at Egglestone, where his son John Alderson lived for a time before moving to Greta Bridge and then to Staindrop. I cannot, however, find a Census record for 1841. There is also a baptism record for a Benjamin Alderson in 1783 at Holbeck and this may be the man who is my great great great grandfather.

I have an Esther Atheron (b1784 in Pigburn) married to James Brelsford (b 1781 in Finningley) one of whose sons was William Brelsford born in Pigburn, Brodsworth, Nr Doncaster in 1807.
It is Esther’s family that I am interested in. I have her father as Robert (Adron) hailing from Darfield and his father as Samuel (Arderan) from Hooton Pagnell. Since the family name has various different spellings I am struggling to sort out the various families in the area. Help!
Also, in another part of my tree, my other great great grandmother was Mary Ann Ardern (B 1850) from Torkington, Stockport, Cheshire, Father William (b 1823 Disley) whose father was also William (b abt 1798 also Disley). Does anyone know of a connection between the two sides of the Pennines? Geographically they are not that far apart.

I am trying to research my mother’s family. She was born in Pudsey in 1887. Her siblings were Joseph Cassell (1873), Arthur (1875) Florence (1879). All three married but did not have any children. Mum, Hilda, was a milliner and had a shop at 40 Greenside before she married my father, Herbert Rhymes. I have traced my grandarents who I never knew. William Armitage married Jane Ann Castle in 1873. William was born 10.12.1843 in Pudsey, Jane Ann was born 18.1.1851 at Snaith, East Yorks.
I have never seen a picture of my grandparents and wonder if there is someone who has old photos, that I could perhaps have a copy of. My great-grandparents, I am pretty sure, were Joseph Armitage and Hannah Hodgson. On the 1851 census they are living at 288 Heights, Pudsey. Joseph is a Cloth Miller. Hannah was born at Eccleshill. They had four children – Ned 1842, William 1843, Mary 1845, Oliver 1847.
I am hopeful of going back another generation but have found two John Armitages who had a son called Joseph on the same census and both Josephs were twenty years old. How do I know which is the right one? Can anyone help please?

My grandfather, George Calvert Armstrong, was middle one of three brothers. The family were all closely connected with the railways in Yorkshire and Durham. The eldest, Joseph, married Matilda (Tilly) Dickenson of Harrogate, and was killed in the 1914-18 war. He is buried at Stonefall, Harrogate. He had a son Robert who was born about 1914. I believe he lived in Leeds. I wondered if he had any family who might be able to help me with my family tree. The younger son was John Armstrong who died in 1989 (?) in the Darlington area and was very knowledgable about steam railways.

I am seeking any information on the Atha families of Leeds. My great-grandmother, Nelly Atha, was born in 1889 in Hunslet, the daughter of Arthur Henry Atha and Susannah Whitehouse. There were two sisters: Lily born 1886 and Rebecca born 1890. The family are listed in the census records for Hunlet as Harry and Susannah. He was much older than her and it is a family legend that he was a prolific bigamist so Susannah was probably a later ‘wife’. I remember there being a Leeds councillor or MP called Bernard Atha – according to my grandmother he was the spitting image of her mother, Nelly, and she believed he was from another branch of the bigamous families.
I’m not sure if Arthur was his real name (as given on his marriage cert to Susannah) so I can’t find details of his birth. He disappears from the records (possibly in prison) and an Alfred Atha is listed as lodging with Susannah and family. Any help with this family history mystery would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching my Auton family history which originated from twin sons Thomas and William Auton from Arrathorne, North Yorkshire, in 1697. My direct link is through Thomas who had a son Leonard in 1728, who also had a son Leonard in 1764. This Leonard married Jane Pattison and had a son John Auton, born 1795 who was transported to Tasmania on the convict ship ‘Medina’ in 1825 – this John was my great-great-grandfather and he died here in Tasmania in 1866. He left a wife, Margaret, and two small sons Leonard born 1820 and John born 1822 in Patrick Brompton. I believe Leonard was a coalminer (he died in 1902 in West Wylan) and John was a tailor (he died in 1886 in Crook, Co. Durham). Convict John remarried in Tasmania to another convict. If anyone has a connection to this Auton family I would dearly love you to contact me to exchange info. and perhaps photos as you have a large Auton family out here in Tasmania, Australia. I have been trying to locate a William Auton who posted a notice on the UKvillages.co.uk website some time ago saying he was a direct descendant of the above Convict John but I have been unable to find him.

My great grandfather William Ibbotson born 1847 at Grantley married Sarah Auton born 1850. They moved to Leeds about 1870. If you are from either of these families I would love to hear from you as I can not get back any further.

Alice Auton was born about 1780 and married my great-great-great-great-grandfather John Jefferson in Thirsk in 1803. I have been unable to find out where she was born, as she died before the 1851 census. Please could anyone help?

I’m going over to the UK in August for the Olympics with my partner. My parents and family are from Hull, Yorkshire. My father passed away last year and my mum is forgetful. Im looking for descendants of Gladys Mary Ayres, married to Walter Ayres (Col). My mum’s name is Glennys Billany (Ayres) and she was married to Walter Billany. Walter has only one surviving brother left, Lance Billany, I think he lives somewhere in Yorkshire, never married. My Gran had sisters there but are all deceased, but I know I have cousins there somewhere. I would love to contact them and maybe see some of them when I’m over there in August. Walter Ayres died in 1975, and Granddad Billany died in 1964. I don’t have many details. I know that Gran and Pop lived at 25 Kingthorp ? Hull back in the 1960s/70s because we lived there also.
