Six miles south of Huddersfield, situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, Holmfirth is a small, picturesque town that always attracts visitors. It is best known as the location for the television series Last of the Summer Wine and thousands of fans come to Holmfirth every year to visit locations form the series such as Sid's Café and Nora Batty's cottage.
There is more to Holmfirth, though, than Last of the Summer Wine. The Holme Valley scenery around the village is stunning and attracts walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. Within the town itself are places such as the CragRats studio theatre and the Picturedrome cinema, as well as a Last of the Summer Wine exhibition in Sid's Café and a TV location tour. The town is pleasant to walk around and has many alleyways, side lanes and typical terraces of old weavers' cottages. |

Holmfirth has the lovely georgian Holy Trinity Church, dating from 1777-8. The gable faces the street and the tower, at the eastern end, is built against a steep hillside.
The markets in Holmfirth are a real treat, offering a range of fresh produce, essential items, collectibles, gifts and many hidden gems. The general market is every Thursday, with a vintage market every Wednesday and a craft and food market every Saturday. There is a farmers' market on the third Sunday every month.
There are numerous popular walks in the Holmfirth area, and as the town is almost entirely surrounded by hills containing reservoirs, there are walks of varying length and difficulty that incorporate these reservoirs. The Digley Reservoir is to the south-west of Holmfirth and if you stick to the path around the edge, a short walk of just over a mile takes you through fields and alongside woods. To the north of the nearby village of Meltham is Blackmoorfoot Reservoir which is wheelchair accessible and popular with birdwatchers. There are a series of paths at Ramsden Reservoir that provide walks in the valley and over moors near Holmfirth. The paths in the area include a mixture of moorland and unsurfaced paths, presenting beautiful views across the valley and up onto the higher moors. For the more adventurous walkers, a 24 mile circular walk will take you through the Holme Valley. Starting from Berry Brow near Huddersfield, you will pass through quiet villages out onto fields and through wooded valleys. There are lovely views all along this walk, including from the historic Castle Hill.
