The work of architect E W Mountford, this townhall was opened over one hundred years ago by Queen Victoria. The impressive entrance hall features a grand staircase, decorative work and a spectacular chandelier. A statue of Vulcan, symbol of the cities traditional industries, crowns the 210ft tower. A working water-powered crushing mill. The existing building is Georgian, but there has been a mill on this site from 1641. The mill ceased operating in 1975 when a horrendous flood destroyed the weir and removed the mill's power source. The museum specialises in displays of local trades, lifestyles and crafts such as silversmithing and file cutting. Also exhibitions of local customs and folklore from Sheffield and beyond. Opening Times: 28 September, 26 October at 2-5pm. School Trips and other visiting can be arranged with NATCECT for any time during the week, but these days must be booked well in advance. Adult group visits to the museum are £1.50 per person (minimum 15 people) which includes talk and coffee. School visits cost £1 per child (no charge for adults). WORTLEY TOP FORGE

This is believed to be the only surviving ironworks of its kind still on its original site. It comprises working stationary steam engines, the forge, water wheels and hammers.
